About The Position

GrayMatter Robotics is seeking an IT Systems Engineer to manage and resolve IT issues across the organization. This role is designed for someone with a few years of experience who has developed a broad range of skills in Linux, networking, and scripting, and who thrives on variety. The IT Systems Engineer will be the primary point of contact for all IT matters, including internal infrastructure, fleet management, customer site support, and government enclave compliance. The goal is to reduce the burden on DevOps and engineering teams, streamline IT processes, and ensure the smooth operation of all systems.

Requirements

  • 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in IT systems administration, infrastructure, or a related technical role.
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux (Ubuntu preferred).
  • Networking fundamentals, including ability to diagnose and resolve common configuration issues.
  • Some experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible.
  • Basic scripting in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for task automation and workflow improvements.
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Ability to troubleshoot independently, communicate blockers clearly, and drive issues to resolution without being asked twice.
  • Comfortable working onsite at our Carson, CA office with some travel to customer sites.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, Refugee, or Asylee to comply with export regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting both internal employees and external production environments.
  • Familiarity with MDM or RMM tools such as NinjaOne, JAMF, or Kandji.
  • Exposure to AWS (even light usage like storage, EC2, IAM basics).
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as CMMC, NIST 800-171, or ITAR, particularly in enclave or government IT contexts.
  • Experience with monitoring and alerting tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or ELK.
  • Track record of writing documentation and SOPs that other people can actually follow cold.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary IT escalation point, reducing reliance on DevOps and engineering teams for routine and recurring IT requests.
  • Own PC fleet management, including provisioning, imaging, Ansible-based configuration, and Teamviewer enrollment for both internal and customer site machines.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve GPU driver issues and kernel update problems that cause production downtime at customer sites, then build SOPs.
  • Support internal IT requests from all teams, including tool integrations, access management, onboarding and offboarding provisioning, and network configuration.
  • Assist with government enclave maintenance, including compliance logging, access control, and working with our enclave contractor.
  • Own the IT intake process, including standing up a clear ticketing workflow.
  • Work with DevOps on DevOps-adjacent tasks (CI runner uptime, VPN setup, DNS, internal tooling deployments).
  • Field customer site IT support, especially for activation machines, license servers, and network misconfigurations.
  • Reduce and potentially replace reliance on external IT contractors for day-to-day tasks.
