IT Systems Administrator

Federal MfgCharlotte, NC
Hybrid

About The Position

We’re looking for a Systems Administrator who’s equal parts detective, problem-solver, and modernizer — someone who loves a good challenge, enjoys traveling to different manufacturing sites, and isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves when faced with aging hardware, end user issues, while finding creative “site-level IT solutions.” As a Systems Administrator, you will be responsible for evaluating, stabilizing, and standardizing infrastructure across multiple facilities, providing support for end users, network and server environments. You will serve as a technical lead, conducting thorough assessments, managing project execution, addressing security directives, and meticulously documenting all processes. While the IT leadership will oversee project direction and decision-making, you will play a key role in implementation and technical leadership. This position is ideal for someone with genuine curiosity, excellent communication skills, and the drive and commitment to make lasting improvements across a diverse, dynamic IT landscape.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in user support, systems administration, network management, and virtualization.
  • Proficiency with Windows Server 2012–2025, Active Directory, Group Policy, and DNS/DHCP.
  • Experience with VMware vSphere and/or Hyper-V administration.
  • Strong network experience, including knowledge of switching, routing, and firewalls (SonicWall preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with Nable/NCentral or similar patch and automation platforms.
  • Familiarity with ServiceNow or comparable IT service management (ITSM) systems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and customer communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications such as MCSA/MCSE, VMware VCP, or Network+/Security+ are preferred.
  • Travel up to 25%.
  • A natural IT detective mindset, enjoying the process of tracing problems to their root cause rather than applying superficial fixes.
  • Experience modernizing outdated infrastructure and transforming “mystery networks” into stable, supportable systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Nable/Ncentral, ServiceNow, and SonicWall.
  • Proven ability to balance empathy for end users with technical accuracy and precision.
  • M365/Azure experience or certifications.
  • The capacity to maintain humor while troubleshooting, remain curious during travel, and thrive when tackling challenges that others may avoid.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring system and infrastructure, identifying risks, gaps, and opportunities for modernization.
  • Provide detailed technical requirements—including system compatibility checks, security compliance standards to the IT Leadership for proper project management of IT upgrade projects (hardware, software, or network).
  • Outline specific steps to minimize downtime, such as scheduling upgrades during non-peak hours and implementing temporary backup or failover solutions.
  • Lead the technical execution of projects involving Windows Server, Active Directory, VMware, Hyper-V, network infrastructure, and patch automation.
  • Support and maintain LAN/WAN networks, firewalls (SonicWall preferred), switches, routers, VPNs, and wireless access points.
  • Manage server virtualization, storage, backup, and disaster recovery systems.
  • Implement and monitor patch management using N-able/N-central, ensuring timely and reliable updates across all systems and endpoints.
  • Create and maintain patch management policies for all devices (servers, desktops, laptops), ensuring all devices receive security patches within seven days of release.
  • Conduct regular audits to verify compliance with patching policies.
  • Address and remediate security issues and directives from the corporate security team by collaborating on patching, endpoint protection, and compliance requirements.
  • Participate in change control, maintenance scheduling, and contingency planning to ensure smooth execution and minimal user disruption.
  • Collaborate with the IT leadership to standardize and document configurations, procedures, and site-specific nuances for consistency across locations.
  • M365 group, identity management, SharePoint and Teams administration.
  • Provide end-user support, focusing on maintaining uptime, resolving escalations, and delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Promote and enforce IT best practices at each site, guiding and educating users with clarity, patience, and professionalism.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed system diagrams, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and runbooks to ensure continuity, knowledge transfer, and readiness for handoff.
  • Training and mentoring of Junior IT staff

Benefits

  • comprehensive medical/dental programs
  • life insurance
  • a generous paid time off program
  • a retirement savings plan with a company match
