About The Position

The Department of Family & Community Services is recruiting for an IT Systems Administrator 1 in Juneau. This position provides daily support for site file and print servers, ensuring reliable access, routine maintenance, and prompt issue resolution. It involves performing core Active Directory tasks, authoring, testing, and deploying Group Policy Objects (GPOs), and assisting with entry-level datacenter administration. The role also supports WAN network operations by helping plan, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot Ethernet and Wi-Fi infrastructure. The Department of Family and Community Services (DFCS) mission is 'To provide support, safety, and personal well-being for vulnerable Alaskans.' The Network Services (NS) of DFCS collaborates with other IT sections to maintain technological operations and security.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of specifications, uses, and types of computer or computer-related equipment (Hardware).
  • Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software (Infrastructure Design).
  • Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications (Operating Systems).
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components (Systems Integration).
  • Training in computer science, information technology, or system administration – or a similar field or professional experience – that provided knowledge of systems, networking software, hardware, protocols, and scripting/automation tools.
  • Customer Service: Assess client needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations; know about available products and services; committed to providing quality products and services.
  • Network Management: Knowledge of the operation, management, and maintenance of network and telecommunication systems and linked systems and peripherals.
  • Technical Competence: Use knowledge acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience; work with, understand, and evaluate technical information; advise others on technical issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily support for site file and print servers, ensuring reliable access, routine maintenance, prompt issue resolution, and traveling to remote sites as needed to address on-premises issues.
  • Perform core Active Directory tasks—including account maintenance, group membership updates, and basic directory troubleshooting—while using PowerShell to streamline repetitive operations.
  • Author, test, and deploy user and computer Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to support secure and consistent configurations across the environment.
  • Assist with entry-level datacenter administration such as basic server provisioning, hardware handling, system monitoring, and performing scripted tasks with PowerShell.
  • Support WAN network operations by helping plan, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot Ethernet and Wi-Fi infrastructure, including hands-on work at remote sites to ensure stable network connectivity.
