IT Storage Engineer

SpaceX•Memphis, TN

About The Position

SpaceX is seeking an experienced storage engineer with deep expertise in enterprise storage platforms. This role supports mission-critical workloads, including simulation, telemetry, and test data processing, in performance-critical settings. The engineer will build and operate on-premises storage infrastructure, with hands-on experience in Pure and NetApp systems running iSCSI, and will work across storage hardware, transport, protocols, and operating systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or another STEM discipline and at least 3 years of professional IT storage engineering experience; alternatively, at least 5 years of IT storage engineering experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience with enterprise storage platforms: NetApp, Pure Storage, VAST, and HPE Alletra.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Must meet SpaceX's stated ITAR eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee or asylee, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with client and server hardware/software, monitoring tools, enterprise networking, and virtualization.
  • Mid-level experience with DFS administration.
  • High level of network knowledge.
  • Experience automating infrastructure with Python, PowerShell, or Ansible.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex designs clearly.
  • Experience collaborating with virtualization teams as an infrastructure engineer.
  • Strong understanding of storage protocols: NFS, CIFS/SMB, iSCSI, and NVMe over TCP.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain storage infrastructure across high-performance, capacity, archive, backup/recovery, and disaster recovery tiers.
  • Architect and operate high-throughput, low-latency storage and support exabyte-scale file systems, such as VAST, for simulation, telemetry, and high-concurrency workloads.
  • Administer storage systems including NetApp, Pure FlashArray/FlashBlade, VAST, and HPE Alletra.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot storage performance across hardware, transport (RDMA), and protocol layers.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues involving interactions among protocols and operating systems.
  • Manage storage access, data permissions, and access controls across different protocols and operating systems.
  • Develop automation and tooling for monitoring, capacity utilization and planning, configuration management, and alerting.
  • Define and enforce standards for storage deployment, performance tuning, and operational management.
  • Collaborate with compute, networking, and application teams to align storage strategies with system architecture and workload requirements.
  • Participate in scheduled maintenance and an on-call rotation, and occasionally install hardware physically.
