About The Position

This position involves designing and creating system configurations for operating system and application installations and upgrades. The role maintains system deployment using SCCM and Jamf for rapid PC deployments and minimal downtime, supporting a mix of desktops, laptops, and specialized lab systems. Responsibilities include assisting with automated software deployment and desktop management to maintain current patch levels, and scripting in PowerShell and Bash for automation. The IT Generalist will serve as the front-line computer support for over 50 labs and research groups, five centers, totaling over 400 customers, 350+ computers, and 40+ mobile devices across multiple campus locations, counties, and globally. This includes monitoring the helpdesk system, assisting customers with technical support, documenting tasks, installing and maintaining computer equipment, peripherals, and A/V equipment. The role also involves working with various university departments and external vendors to troubleshoot issues, implement new systems, and procure equipment. Additionally, the position will engage with staff to enhance workflows using the Microsoft 365 suite, coordinate and provide training, research software, and solve equipment and software problems. The IT Generalist will also serve as the Department Contact for Asset Management, including surplus requests, inventory scanning, and off-site certification updates, as well as manage all VOIP phones and network ports. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • The ability to crawl under carrels and desks and lift up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Apple macOS, and other applications authorized for use on the network is preferred.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, software, peripherals, basic computer networking, and computer network security concepts.
  • Ability to learn on the job from various resources, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with users and peers, and diagnose and resolve computer problems.
  • Knowledge of systems management software and techniques including but not limited to: Systems Center Configuration Manager, Jamf Pro, Group Policy, Active Directory, Office 365 (including Teams, PowerApps, and Power Automate).
  • Knowledge of automation and scripting technology (PowerShell and AppleScript as examples). General programming knowledge would satisfy this.
  • Knowledge and experience managing and maintaining Rees Scientific freezer and lab monitoring hardware and software.
  • Possess the ability to work independently, productively, and self-prioritize in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and create systems configurations to install and upgrade operating systems and applications.

  • Assist with automated software deployment and desktop management through various toolsets to maintain current patch levels of both the Operating System and Applications.
  • Scripting in PowerShell and Bash to automate software deployment in SCCM and Jamf.
  • Serve as the front-line computer support for 50+ labs and research groups, five centers, totaling 400+ customers, 350+ computers and 40+ mobile devices across multiple campus locations, counties, and globally.
  • Monitor the helpdesk system to ensure timely responses to customer requests.
  • Assist customers with day-to-day computer operations and technical support.
  • Document tasks and projects in the helpdesk and IT knowledgebase.
  • Install and move new computer equipment, peripherals, and maintain existing systems, including conference room A/V equipment and printers.
  • Works with UFIT, UF Health, UF Telecom, and various external vendors to troubleshoot issues, implement new systems, and procure equipment.
  • Engages EPI and Lab staff to enhance workflows using the Microsoft 365 suite (including but not limited to Teams, PowerApps, and Power Automate).
  • Coordinate and provide workshops, training and support for students, faculty, and staff, including new employees, usually in relation to specialized software or new employee orientations.
  • Research software for end users; solve equipment and software problems through reading, self-study, and online activities.
  • Serve as the Department Contact for EPI for Asset Management.
  • Perform surplus requests, annual scanning of inventory, decal requests, and off-site certification updates.
  • Management of all EPI VOIP phones and network ports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
