About The Position

This role is for a Senior IT Architect (Level 4) responsible for designing, developing, analyzing, and maintaining overall system architecture, including cloud environments. The architect will coordinate the integration of complex solutions, research new technologies, and develop specifications for new products and services. Key responsibilities include system design, database configuration, providing best practices for identity management and access controls, technical support for networks, and managing hardware and software installations. The role involves working with stakeholders to identify requirements, modeling business scenarios, developing integrations across multiple organizations, and ensuring systems meet performance, scalability, reliability, and security needs. The architect will utilize engineering knowledge for testing and deploying systems, provide technical direction and mentoring to junior staff, and document best practices. They will also design, develop, install, patch, and upgrade supporting products, establish policies, and ensure efficient utilization of management systems. This position also includes information security and privacy responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree, and 9 years of experience in a technical field including Computer Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • Must have Design and deployment activities for custom LLM environments.
  • Designed and built scalable, secure, high‑performance high‑end GPU cluster infrastructure for AI workloads.
  • Must have experience in AI/LLM‑based workloads design and engineering specific to DOE and INL lab mission.
  • Knowledgeable of computer systems/operations, Oracle database, C++ and C# programming languages.
  • An understanding of the Linux and Windows operating system and programming.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in complex, heterogeneous environments, simultaneously operating Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X/macOS, and Linux systems.
  • Understanding of various scripting languages, such as PowerShell, Python, JavaScript, etc.
  • Cyber security and information assurance regulations such as FISMA, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, SOX, SP, FIPS, RMF, etc.
  • Support and use the established Integrated Safety Management System principles to ensure work is conducted safely in accordance with Safety, Health, and Environmental requirements.
  • Technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas.
  • Has wide-ranging experience.
  • Uses professional concepts and company objectives to solve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Interfaces with and mentor junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, analyze, and maintain overall system architecture, which may include cloud environments.
  • Coordinate design and integration of complete solutions including multiple commercial and custom subsystems.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of new and emerging technologies required to provide long-term enhancements to the reliability, performance, and functionality of system architecture.
  • Develop specifications for new products and services.
  • Research and recommend technology and information to improve the current systems and meet future mission needs.
  • Perform system design and programming, ensuring that the databases are configured correctly.
  • Provide suggestions for best practices for identity management, access controls, and credential integration for multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  • Provide technical support and modifications to the network to ensure network is operating at optimal conditions.
  • Manage the planning and installation of all hardware and software for INL systems.
  • Work with stakeholders and data owners/stewards to identify requirements and expected outcomes.
  • Model and frame business scenarios that are meaningful and which impact critical business processes and/or decisions.
  • Develop customizations to integrate applications and federate services across multiple organizations.
  • Responsible for technical planning, architecture development, and modification of specifications that meet performance, scalability, reliability, security, and other needs.
  • Utilize engineering knowledge and principles to test and place hardware and software systems into production and to aid in the analysis, design, development, and assessment of INL systems, devices, and networks.
  • Provide support to technical resources during execution of projects.
  • Perform testing and conflict analysis on new systems to be released to INL employees and provide results to the appropriate INL organizations to support organizational business objectives.
  • Provide technical direction and mentoring for junior staff to increase their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Coach and train members of IM in the effective use of standards and tools within the established architecture.
  • Document best practices of software engineering and software defined services.
  • Design, develop, install, patch and upgrade supporting products; establish policies and document procedures to maintain them.
  • Ensure functions and capabilities of the management systems are utilized efficiently and appropriately using an architectural approach.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Pay range: $114,360 – $234,336
