About The Position

The Investigative Reporting Workshop (IRW) is seeking student Reporters/Researchers for the Fall 2026 semester. Reporters/Researchers will work with publishing partners on a variety of subjects, including but not limited to, immigration, public health, and law enforcement. This position is open to undergraduate students at American University and reports directly to the Executive Editor of the IRW. Student Reporters/Researchers will interact with other staff, students, faculty, and consultants of the IRW. This position does not have a Federal Work Study (FWS) award.

Requirements

  • Enrolled American University student
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Less than 1 year of relevant experience

Nice To Haves

  • 1 - 3 years of relevant experience

Responsibilities

  • Support IRW’s investigations.
  • Check the accuracy and validity of data analysis used in projects.
  • Handle daily data work for the various data-driven journalism projects within the IRW.
  • Contribute to one or more investigative reports.
  • Request and gather public information.
  • Clean and analyze received data.
  • Develop journalistic stories.
