About The Position

The Investigative Reporting Workshop (IRW) at American University's School of Communication is seeking a student graphic designer for the Fall 2026 semester. IRW is an editorially independent, nonprofit newsroom. This is a learning environment where students of varying skill levels are welcome, and training will be provided for new tools and web production skills. This position is specifically for enrolled American University students and is not eligible for Federal Work Study (FWS) awards.

Requirements

  • Must be an enrolled American University student.
  • Undergraduate major or minor in journalism, graphic design, or related fields.
  • Design-focused with an understanding of design for journalism, including data visualization and web design through WordPress, as well as design for communications.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Less than 1 year of relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 - 3 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design and web production.
  • Informational graphic design and development for stories.
  • Social media development.
  • Design related to posters for events, swag, or other marketing efforts, including fundraising campaigns, and office needs, such as letterhead.
