About The Position

This position supports golf course irrigation and turf management operations. The position will be trained in irrigation system functions, supplemental watering, and the application of fertilizers and pesticides. Responsibilities include hand-watering playing surfaces, assisting with irrigation repairs, sprinkler leveling and installation, valve troubleshooting, and maintenance of irrigation equipment. The IPAA also receives training toward Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator licensing and learns proper pesticide application techniques, including backpack and spot spraying, while following all personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license (must be able to operate manual/standard vehicles)
  • Knowledge & proven experience with the operation of mowers, tractors, loaders, aerifiers, trucks, pruning equipment & sod cutters.
  • Knowledge in the operation of different golf turf and landscape maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to use good judgment and to work in a responsible and safe manner.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with employees, supervisors and guests in a respectful manner.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Helps to maintain all aspects of the golf course and Grounds irrigation system.
  • Pipe, sprinkler and valve installation & repairs.
  • Learns to check sprinklers to assure proper operation.
  • Learns to investigate wet and dry areas, troubleshoots and learns to repair electrical problems to sprinkler heads.
  • Helps Irrigation Technician audit sprinklers & valves of their functionality.
  • Learns to isolate irrigation system to perform repairs.
  • Digging using hand tools and mechanical tools.
  • Begins training for use of; backhoe, front-end loader, skid-steer loader, mini excavator & fork-lift.
  • Will be trained and achieve proficiency in Equipment Operator and Groundskeeper position standards. Will substitute in those roles, as assigned by the superintendent and assistant superintendent.
  • Assist in-house construction and renovation projects including irrigation and drainage work.
  • Will be supervised while applying fertility and pesticides to the club grounds.
  • Will be training on Hawaiʻi Commercial & Private pesticide application licensed techniques.
  • Will be trained in Integrated Pest Management.
  • Will be trained on time-management, project preparation & completion, and managing golf course playing surfaces with irrigation and application techniques.
  • Assist in any storm damage clean up and repairs.
  • Other duties may be assigned, as determined by the supervisory staff.
