About The Position

The IP Registered Nurse provides clinically competent perioperative nursing care to surgical patients through the nursing process. The role includes circulating, scrub, and phase-one PACU nursing duties, with care tailored to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. The nurse assesses patient status, plans and prioritizes care, delivers interventions, communicates with patients and care teams, and documents patient needs, interventions, responses, and outcomes in the EHR. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

Associate degree in nursing required; bachelor's degree preferred.
Current Registered Nurse license in the state of Indiana.
At least 1 year of relevant work experience.
Strong customer service skills.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to multitask, prioritize, interpret information, and be assertive when necessary.
Ability to perform basic nursing skills.
Mechanical ability to work with machines and procedural equipment, including autoclaves, cleaning equipment, central physiologic monitors, patient beds, and cart alarm systems.
Ability to operate basic office equipment.

Responsibilities

Follow patient safety practices, including using two patient identifiers, approved abbreviations, final verification before invasive procedures, and the required time-out process.
Clarify physician orders when needed, use standing orders when indicated, read back verbal orders and critical lab values, and report patient changes, sentinel events, adverse drug reactions, or incidents as appropriate.
Assess patients before, during, and after surgery; respond to changes in condition; plan and prioritize care; and document assessments, interventions, responses, and outcomes in the EHR.
Communicate with and educate patients, caregivers, and family members respectfully and in a timely manner; provide comfort and attend to physiological and psychological needs.
As a circulator, coordinate patient transport, verify required preoperative documentation, assist anesthesia during induction, confirm surgeon availability before induction, complete preoperative checklists, and participate in final time-out verification.
Perform circulating duties according to department policy, select and check equipment, handle and label specimens and other materials correctly, and provide concise handoff reports.
As a scrub nurse, prepare instruments and supplies for scheduled procedures, use instruments and devices appropriately, perform sponge, needle, and sharp counts, identify specimens, and initiate final verification before procedures.
As a phase-one PACU nurse, complete initial and ongoing assessments, develop and prioritize the plan of care, manage pain, document patient response, and provide concise transfer reports.
Obtain, prepare, and administer IVs and medications; obtain and administer blood products according to policy; check patient identity and allergies; observe and document responses; and respond competently to adverse reactions.
Follow policies for controlled medications, moderate sedation, PPE, hand hygiene, surgical hand scrub, attire, equipment use, and emergency communication systems.
Care for, clean, decontaminate, and dispose of instruments and supplies appropriately; participate in room turnover; complete flash sterilization and high-level disinfection of endoscopes; and keep supplies and equipment organized and available.
Document supplies, implants, and equipment for charging; maintain accurate records of hours worked; review policies and participate on teams when requested; attend 75% of scheduled department meetings and review minutes for meetings not attended; and complete continuing education to maintain competency.
Provide care, treatment, and services in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
