About The Position

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as an Intellectual Property Paralegal. No prior Intellectual Property experience is necessary. On-the-job training is provided. General law firm experience is preferred. This position offers an exciting opportunity to learn about trademark, patent and copyright law as well as how to interact with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the United States Copyright Office. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational skills, a strong desire to learn new skills, a commitment to deadlines and the ability to juggle competing priorities, to work professionally with all members of the IP team and to provide excellent client service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or at least 3 years’ experience working in an office environment.
  • Demonstrates exacting attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates a professional attitude, strong follow-up skills, and ability to prioritize, and juggle, tasks effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft WORD, Excel and Outlook.

Nice To Haves

  • General law firm experience is preferred.
  • Experience with a document management system (such as NetDocs) preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with all aspects of patent and trademark applications, including communicating with attorneys and clients, drafting and filing various related documents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”), review and screening of communications from the USPTO, and docketing and review of deadlines.
  • Maintaining the IP department’s trademark and patent dockets and serving as a key participant in periodic meetings, about every three weeks, with all of the attorneys in the IP practice to comprehensively review the status of pending trademark and patent applications.
  • Conduct factual research (e.g., Google searches) and analysis to support attorneys in various intellectual property tasks as to trademark and brand clearance, trademark and brand policing and for other various issues arising in trademark, patent or copyright litigation.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents using various digital forms available on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website and draft correspondence to clients.
  • Manage and maintain case files, including organizing documents, tracking deadlines, and updating case status reports.
  • Communicate with clients regarding case updates, deadlines, and document requests under the supervision of attorneys.
  • Monitor the progress of patent and trademark applications at the USPTO and, at times, with overseas patent and trademark offices.
  • Review and manage incoming communications.
