About The Position

The Investigator (SVIU) position is with the State of Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC). BWC is the state agency that cares for Ohio workers by promoting a culture of safety at work and at home and ensuring quality medical and pharmacy care is provided to injured workers. For Ohio employers, BWC provides insurance policies to cover workplace injuries and safety and wellness services to prevent injuries. This role involves investigating the facts surrounding injuries, fatalities, and occupational diseases sustained from an employer’s alleged failure to comply with rules and laws for specific safety requirements. The investigator will perform job site inspections, conduct pre and post-inspection conferences with employers, and interview injured workers and witnesses. They will also respond to and conduct preliminary investigations upon occurrences of death proximate to injuries and/or catastrophic injuries as assigned.

Requirements

  • 30 mos. trg. or 30 mos. investigative exp. with experience corresponding to type of complaints & alleged violations appearing in job posting/approved position description; valid driver's license.
  • Completion of associate core program in law enforcement, criminal justice or in academic field commensurate with program area to be assigned per approved Position Description on file; 12 mos. exp. conducting investigations &/or inspections; valid driver’s license.
  • 30 mos. trg. or 30 mos. exp. as Investigator Assistant, 26210 with experience corresponding to type of complaints & alleged violations appearing in job posting/approved position description; valid driver's license.
  • Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
  • Knowledge of BWC policies & procedures; BWC Safety Violations Investigation Unit policies & procedures; investigative practices, techniques & procedures; laws & rules applicable to complaints & alleged safety violations under investigation; case preparation & reporting; interviewing; public relations; human relations.
  • Skill in use of personal computer; computer peripherals (e.g. scanners, printers); BWC software (e.g. word processing, database, spreadsheet, statistical, email, OCR); scanning; photo editing; graphics; digital cameras; operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to collect data & establish facts concerning validity of complaints & allegations; prepare accurate, concise & meaningful case reports recommending final dispositions; use proper research methods in gathering data; interpret extensive variety of technical material in books, journals & manuals; deal with variety of variables in somewhat unfamiliar context; maintain accurate records; complete routine forms; understand basic physics, engineering, ergonomics & psychological & physiological factors relative to an accident; successfully interview claimants, witnesses, alleged violators & others with a diverse & wide range of backgrounds, education & knowledge; work alone on most tasks; handle routine & sensitive inquiries & documents from claimants, employers, witnesses, alleged violators, government officials & co-workers; with or without reasonable accommodation, climb over &/or crawl under large machinery & obstacles, stoop for long periods to inspect machinery & accident sites, ascend & descend ladders, stairs, work platforms & scaffolding, traverse elevated catwalks, walkways & planks to gain access to accident sites or machinery, carry heavy (approximately 50 lbs.) equipment (e.g. computer & equipment cases) for long distances & for extended periods of time, lift, move &/or manipulate heavy machinery parts to access, view, inspect & photograph ; operate motor vehicles over long distances; identify hazardous materials & equipment; identify potentially hostile or violent situations & disturbances in the field (e.g. locating injured workers &/or witnesses in various neighborhoods & business districts); skillfully & tactfully handle hostile &/or violent persons & groups of persons to ensure personal safety through use of verbal/tactical communication.
  • Must submit an Ohio Civil Service Application using the online Ohio Hiring Management System.
  • Final applicant will be required to sign a background check authorization form and undergo a criminal background check.
