About The Position

American Conservation Experience (ACE), in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), is seeking a Member to contribute to invasive plant management and grazing management projects under the mentorship of Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge Staff. This position will support FWS Staff with managing invasive plants on the Refuge by mapping the location of infested areas, assisting with herbicide application, mapping treatment, and monitoring Refuge grazer's electric fences for proper installation. By documenting the current level of infestation, Refuge staff can improve planning on a targeted, multi-year treatment strategy for species such as Phragmites australis and Tamarisk. The fellow will provide support and assistance under the guidance and direction of FWS staff in collecting data on invasive vegetation, documenting treatment areas, verifying electric fence installation, and assisting with other tasks such as installing photo points and nuisance animal removal projects. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals, potentially including gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Requirements

  • Members must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Members must be 21+ to drive due to ACE's insurance and liability requirements.
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.
  • Member may not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.

Nice To Haves

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as natural resources, biology, ecology, or a related subject area.
  • Experience with invasive plant management, plant identification, and data collection software and equipment (ie, GIS and iPads).
  • Ability to follow assigned protocols to perform tasks with many steps.
  • Strong desire to enter the public service field as a natural resource professional.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting data on the type and level of infestation of invasive vegetation on the Refuge.
  • Documenting areas of treatment such as mowing, herbicide application and prescribed burning.
  • Verifying that the grazers have properly installed or moved electric fencing to meet the Refuge's grazing prescription for each area.
  • Assisting the Wildlife Biologist with other tasks such as installing photo points for long-term monitoring of restored areas and/or nuisance animal removal projects, such as beaver relocation with State biologists.
