The lower Missouri River is the largest free-flowing river in the United States, encompassing nearly 1.5 million acres of bottomland habitat for fish, wildlife and plants, while providing commercial transportation and recreation opportunities for communities across our nation's heartland. Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge was established in 1994 for the development, advancement, management, conservation and protection of fish and wildlife resources. Refuge staff focus on restoring those resources in the Missouri River floodplain on the river's final 367 miles to its confluence with the Mississippi River, from St. Louis to Kansas City. Currently, the refuge is composed of 23 separate units, encompassing over 22,000 acres of wildlife habitat. Position Overview: The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. This position will help FWS realize that mission at Big Muddy National Fish And Wildlife Refuge. Members will primarily assist with mapping, management of invasive plants, and general maintenance duties. Members may travel to nearby refuges. Members will also have the opportunity to participate in other activities on the refuge. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups. Schedule: Mon-Fri, 7:30am - 4:00pm. Days/hours may vary throughout the position.
