About The Position

The Intra-Oral Dental Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of the clinic and helps ensure a positive experience for patients and staff. The role calls for professionalism, dependability, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced dental practice. The assistant supports dentists and other staff, performs duties delegated by the Dentist and/or Lead Dental Assistant after receiving adequate office-based training, and maintains a sanitary work environment and compliance with OSHA and HIPAA requirements. Level III assistants are also expected to guide Level I and Level II assistants during daily operations.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Current dental assistant license, registration, or permit as required by applicable state regulations.
Current CPR certification.
Radiography/X-ray certification.
Ability to keep up with the pace of a dental practice and the flow of doctors and patients.
Ability to use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls; repeat movements; bend or twist; sit and stand for long periods; and lift up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

One to three years of dental assisting experience preferred.
Coronal Polishing and/or Sealants certification preferred, where permitted by state law.

Responsibilities

Set up and clean examination or surgery areas, maintain sanitary conditions, and sterilize surfaces and instruments.
Assist the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures and provide appropriate assistance based on broad knowledge of dental procedures.
Guide Level I and Level II assistants during day-to-day operations when working at Level III.
Sterilize instruments; prepare dental materials and cements; process and mount radiographs; and pour and trim cast molds.
Perform duties delegated by the Dentist and/or Lead Dental Assistant for which adequate office-based training has been provided, including taking X-rays once certified.
Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays).
Maintain a surgically clean work environment to help prevent the spread of infection and disease.
Help patients feel comfortable before, during, and after dental treatment, and provide instructions for oral care following treatment.
Teach patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies, such as brushing, flossing, and nutritional counseling.
Take impressions of patients’ teeth for study casts (models of teeth).
Create, send, and track lab cases.
Monitor, order, and maintain the budget for dental supplies.
Perform office management tasks, often using a personal computer.
Assist in updating and maintaining client dental records and charts.
Maintain equipment and coordinate necessary repairs.
Ask about patients’ medical histories and take blood pressure and pulse as needed.
Provide support to dentists and other staff as needed.
Maintain OSHA and HIPAA compliance.
