Interventional Radiology Technologist II : Cath Lab

Albany Medical Center•Albany, NY
•$77,075 - $119,466

About The Position

The Interventional Radiology Technologist II (CVIT II) is the independent-practice level of the Medical Imaging Technologist career pathway within Albany Medical Center’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. The role is intended for experienced procedural imaging professionals who can apply their existing expertise while developing skills in invasive cardiovascular care. Cardiac catheterization experience is welcome but not required; technologists with interventional radiology, vascular interventional radiology, or other applicable procedural imaging experience receive cardiac-specific orientation and competency development. Following validation of applicable competencies, the technologist works independently in core Cath Lab responsibilities, including cardiovascular imaging, hemodynamic monitoring, diagnostic catheterization, routine coronary intervention, equipment management, and emergency cardiovascular care. Albany Med is a high-acuity regional referral and academic medical center. The position offers exposure to a diverse cardiovascular patient population and procedures and therapies including acute STEMI care, coronary intervention, structural heart procedures, mechanical circulatory support, and other advanced therapies. The technologist works with cardiovascular technologists, nurses, interventional cardiologists, structural heart specialists, and trainees, contributing expertise in imaging, radiation safety, image quality, and dose optimization. Continued development and advancement within the Medical Imaging Technologist career pathway are available as experience and advanced competencies are achieved.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology or qualifying Medical Imaging program.
  • At least one year of cardiac catheterization, interventional radiology, vascular interventional radiology, or other applicable procedural imaging experience.
  • Strong understanding of radiologic imaging principles and cardiovascular anatomy.
  • Knowledge of fluoroscopic imaging and radiation safety practices.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to anticipate procedural needs and respond to emergent situations.
  • Critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • ARRT certification, obtained within the required timeframe for continued New York State licensure.
  • Current New York State license/registration as a Licensed Radiologic Technologist, or eligibility for New York State licensure. Applicable imaging responsibilities may be performed only after appropriate New York State authorization is in place.
  • NYS Contrast Injection Certification within 180 days.
  • BCLS (Basic Life Support) upon hire.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) within 180 days.
  • Equivalent combinations of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous cardiac catheterization laboratory experience.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) within 180 days.

Responsibilities

  • Function independently in core Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory responsibilities after validation of applicable cardiac-specific competencies, including cardiovascular imaging support, hemodynamic monitoring, procedural documentation, equipment and supply management, sterile technique, and procedural support.
  • Complete cardiac-specific orientation and competency validation when entering the role with applicable procedural imaging experience.
  • Apply radiologic imaging expertise to angiographic positioning, image acquisition and quality, radiation dose optimization, radiation safety, and safe use of cardiovascular imaging systems within the established scope of practice.
  • Perform applicable independent imaging procedures, including mechanical prosthetic valve fluoroscopy, under appropriate physician supervision; acquired images are subject to physician review and approval.
  • Serve as a multidisciplinary-team resource regarding radiation safety, imaging principles, image quality, and dose optimization, consistent with experience and scope of practice.
  • Independently perform hemodynamic monitoring using the McKesson system and maintain procedural documentation in Epic after competency validation.
  • Recognize and communicate relevant changes in cardiac rhythm, hemodynamic status, and patient condition within the established scope of the role.
  • Demonstrate independent scrub competency for diagnostic cardiac catheterization and routine percutaneous coronary intervention, including preparation, selection, and appropriate use of equipment.
  • Anticipate procedural needs and support the interventional cardiologist and multidisciplinary team while maintaining sterile technique and patient-safety standards.
  • Maintain working knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, coronary angiography, hemodynamics, procedural equipment and supplies, medications, and technologies routinely used in the Cath Lab.
  • Perform applicable intravascular contrast-administration responsibilities only after obtaining required New York State certification and completing departmental competency validation.
  • Participate in care of high-acuity and emergent cardiovascular patients, including STEMI and other time-sensitive emergencies; function independently as part of the emergency on-call team after required orientation and competency validation.
  • Continue progressive development and exposure to advanced cardiovascular procedures and technologies, including complex coronary intervention, mechanical circulatory support, and structural heart procedures.
  • Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team and serve as a resource to developing staff as experience and competency allow.
