About The Position

Prisma International, Inc. (Prisma) is a language services provider seeking experienced onsite INTERPRETERS to join their team of independent contractors. The role involves providing simultaneous and/or consecutive ONSITE interpretation (OSI) services to Prisma clients in California. Video Remote (VRI) appointments may also be available. The company is particularly interested in Spanish, Chinese (Cantonese), Korean, Punjabi, Tagalog, and Vietnamese speakers. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in specialized topics such as water board meetings/hearings, environmental and public health management, water conservation, and regulatory and resource funding.

Requirements

  • At least two years of onsite (in person) experience interpreting in legal/courts settings and/or for state/federal government offices (if not court-certified in California or US Federal Courts).
  • Resume must outline relevant experience.
  • Trained and/or tested by recognized interpretation skills assessment organizations and/or higher education institutions.
  • Three references who can confirm your status as a professional onsite interpreter.
  • Full fluency in English and the other language.
  • Minimum age: 18+ years or older.
  • Minimum education: High School Diploma.
  • Must undergo a criminal history background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Court-certified in California or with US Federal Courts.
  • Experience in specialized topics: Water board meetings/hearings, environmental and public health management, water conservation, regulatory and resource funding.
  • Strong experience using virtual interpretation tools (e.g., Zoom).
  • Ability to use tabletop sound booths, interpreter control units, FM transmitters, and headset/receivers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide simultaneous and/or consecutive ONSITE interpretation (OSI) services to Prisma clients in the state of California.
  • Provide Video Remote (VRI) interpretation services (may be available).
  • Provide simultaneous and consecutive onsite & video remote interpretation for non-English speakers and state government representatives.
  • Effectively review and understand all necessary background documents prior to assignments.
  • Use virtual interpretation tools (e.g., Zoom).
  • Use tabletop sound booths, interpreter control units, FM transmitters, and headset/receivers.
  • Maintain polite forms of expression, enunciation, and a high-level of customer service.
  • Ensure correct concepts and meanings between the speaker and Limited English Proficient (LEP) speakers.
  • Ensure correct grammar, clarity, and tone between English and the other language.
  • Follow the speaker’s direction, professionally interject when clarification is needed, and manage the flow of a conversation.
  • Refrain from side conversations with the LEP and entering into any disagreement with the customer or LEP.
  • Maintain a professional appearance, polite demeanor, and be punctual.
  • Comply with applicable ethics and standards.
