About The Position

American Conservation Experience (ACE), in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking an Interpretation & Visitor Services Member to contribute to historic preservation projects alongside Mount Rainier National Park staff. This role focuses on visitor education, conservation messaging, visitor services, and safety, with an emphasis on public contact, winter recreation awareness, and stewardship of park resources. The member will gain hands-on experience in interpretation, visitor center operations, winter safety, and National Park Service operations while working in dynamic winter conditions. The position offers professional development, exposure to land management agencies, and networking opportunities with professionals, including shadowing other park divisions.

Requirements

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required three-part criminal history check
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Member may not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement or as defined by AmeriCorps
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, and hiking in winter conditions.
  • Manual dexterity required for computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment.
  • Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
  • Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Frequently moves up to 50 lbs., ability to move up to 75 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Operate visitor centers and information stations by providing information on park resources and facilities, responding to visitor inquiries, and supporting daily visitor services operations.
  • Assist with wilderness permit station operations and educate visitors on wilderness regulations, safety, and Leave No Trace practices.
  • Learn about Mount Rainier's natural and cultural resources through training, research materials, and collaboration with park staff to support interpretive programming.
  • Provide informal and roving interpretation by engaging visitors on trails and in visitor use areas and promoting resource protection and stewardship.
  • Develop and present formal and informal interpretive programs and products, which may include orientation talks, guided walks, youth programs, curriculum-based education programs, and digital content.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, safety training, and cross-divisional shadowing while supporting safe operations and, as needed, operating government vehicles.
  • Shadow other divisions to get an overall view of how the park functions.
  • Complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.
