Intern, Photonics Design - Multiphysics Design

Ayar Labs•San Jose, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Ayar Labs is seeking an intern for its Photonics Design team to work on multiphysics design problems related to co-packaged optics. The intern will use electromagnetic, thermal, and charge-transport simulations on an EIC-PIC process and packaging platform to investigate issues affecting the viability of co-packaged optics. The role includes connecting simulations with silicon validation data, examining how packaging, firmware, and device physics—including ring-heater thermals—interact, and applying those findings to future submissions. The internship term is May through August 2027. The position is on-site at the San Jose office. No immigration support is available except for F-1 students, and relocation support is not provided.

Requirements

  • Actively pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering or another engineering field with a photonics specialization.
  • Proficiency with Python.
  • Experience writing well-structured code and developing a codebase as part of a team.
  • Deep understanding of photonic devices, including couplers, photodetectors, electro-optic modulators, micro-ring resonators, and gratings.
  • Experience with simulation and design tools for passive and active optical devices, such as FDTD and charge transport.

Responsibilities

  • Use electromagnetic, thermal, and charge-transport simulations to investigate multiphysics problems in co-packaged optics.
  • Review validation data from silicon to understand how packaging, firmware, and device physics interact.
  • Apply simulation and validation findings to the next design submission.
