Intern, Photonics Design - Multiphysics Design

Ayar Labs•San Jose, CA
•$50 - $60•Onsite

About The Position

Ayar Labs is seeking a Photonics Design intern for a term from May to August 2027. The role focuses on thermal and multiphysics problems related to co-packaged optics, using electromagnetic, thermal, and charge-transport simulations on an EIC-PIC process and packaging platform. The intern will connect simulation results with silicon validation data, investigating how packaging, firmware, and device physics—including ring-heater thermals—interact, and apply those findings to a subsequent submission. The position is on-site at the San Jose office. Immigration support is unavailable except for F-1 status, and relocation support is not provided. Pay is $50–$60 per hour, depending on education level.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with Python.
  • Experience writing well-structured code and developing a codebase as part of a team.
  • Deep understanding of photonic devices, including couplers, photodetectors, electro-optic modulators, micro-ring resonators, and gratings.
  • Experience with simulation and design tools for passive and active optical devices, such as FDTD and charge transport.
  • Actively pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering or another engineering field with a Photonics specialization.

Responsibilities

  • Use electromagnetic, thermal, and charge-transport simulations to address thermal and multiphysics challenges for co-packaged optics.
  • Analyze validation data to understand how packaging, firmware, and device physics, including ring-heater thermals, interact.
  • Apply findings from simulation and validation to the next submission.
