About The Position

The Mechanical Designer Intern is a key development role within IMAX’s internship program and is responsible for producing mechanical-based designs for IMAX's new products, product testing, and supporting existing products via redesign for cost reduction, obsolescence and improved performance. This individual will be focused on learning and developing their skills while working with members of the Mechanical Team to ensure the mechanical aspects of IMAX’s products meet the high quality expected of the IMAX brand. This is an internship-level position and will work under close supervision and guidance of other members of the team and department manager.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering post-secondary stream
  • Basic understanding of GD&T principles
  • 3D modelling and detailing using SolidWorks (or equivalent tool)
  • Excellent hands-on skills and mechanical intuition to build IMAX prototypes
  • Ability to formally document mechanical designs and implementations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to follow a formal design/development process
  • Excellent time management and multitasking skills
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary design team consisting of electrical, mechanical, optical, and software professionals
  • Demonstrates a quality mindset and a passion for continuous improvement

Responsibilities

  • Create, revise, and maintain design documentation on new and existing products
  • Participate in design reviews as part of IMAX’s NPD process
  • Utilize 2D and 3D CAD design software to create precise technical designs and digital models
  • Utilize knowledge of IMAX systems to support and improve manufacturing processes
  • Operate in-house 3D printing assets in conjunction with outsourced components to create, assemble and test prototypes to validate designs for new and existing products
  • Assess field issues with legacy designs and work with the cross-functional team to implement improvements
  • Quickly develop new skills and knowledge, and apply them effectively in practice
  • Design functional mechanical parts to align with the high expectations of the IMAX standard
  • Select appropriate parts/materials for strength, weight and function in IMAX designs based on mechanical engineering principles and product specifications
  • Analyze root causes of field issues by formulating theories and thoroughly investigating them
  • Suggest alternative solutions to improve product performance
  • Work with cross-functional teams (internal and external to engineering) to address issues and improve IMAX’s products
