About The Position

CFD Research is looking to fill our intern class for the Summer of 2026. Interns in this program will support research in their area of study and/or interest ranging from Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and more. The program runs 8-10 weeks over the summer and has flexible start and finish dates based on candidate's availability (typically mid-May to August). Each CFD Research Internship has both a mentor and technical manager to help guide them on their research project over the summer. In addition to challenging technical work, CFD Research's program offers professional development and social activities designed to help our interns have a great, all-around summer internship experience. This intern position will utilize in-house and commercial simulation tools to model vehicle responses in high-speed, high-temperature environments. Candidates will execute and post-process simulation results, prepare briefs, and present results to the team. This role may include both direct analysis and development tasks supporting modeling and simulation efforts. Proficiency in one or more languages (Python, Fortran, C/C++) is desired. Preferred candidates will demonstrate knowledge and interest in one or more of the following areas: compressible flow, heat transfer, thermodynamics, numerical methods, finite element analysis (FEA), and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Background consisting of late-undergraduate to graduate level is preferred. This position is for University of Alabama (Main Campus) students only at this time. Typical Degrees hired will include: Aerospace Engineering (Graduate and Undergraduate), Mechanical Engineering (Graduate and Undergraduate), Other similar Engineering (Graduate and Undergraduate) Disciplines.

Requirements

  • Candidate must be a US Citizen
  • Student must be pursuing a degree (Graduate or Undergraduate) in a related discipline
  • Internship requires students to be available to work in Huntsville, AL for the summer
