Intern, Electrical Engineer
About The Position
As an Intern, Electrical Engineer at Zekelman Industries’ Atlas Tube facility, this role supports the engineering team by assisting with electrical, controls, and maintenance-related projects in a manufacturing environment. The intern will gain hands-on exposure to industrial electrical systems and manufacturing equipment while learning from experienced engineering and maintenance professionals. The intern will collaborate closely with engineering, maintenance, controls, and production teams to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. This is an on-site role located in Birmingham, Alabama. The official Zekelman internship program runs from May 24, 2027, through August 13, 2027. This role is ideal for a student early in their electrical engineering journey who is curious, safety-minded, detail-oriented, and interested in applying classroom knowledge within an industrial manufacturing environment.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field.
- Coursework or introductory exposure to engineering, coding, PLCs, automation, electrical engineering, or controls concepts.
- Foundational understanding of electrical engineering concepts.
- Ability to read technical diagrams or willingness to learn.
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing or plant-floor environment.
- Detail-oriented with strong safety awareness and a willingness to ask questions.
Responsibilities
- Support electrical engineering and controls projects that improve manufacturing equipment and plant operations.
- Assist with basic electrical troubleshooting, testing, and issue resolution alongside engineering and maintenance team members.
- Participate in electrical panel walk-downs, wiring checks, equipment inspections, and documentation updates.
- Review electrical drawings, technical diagrams, and equipment documentation with guidance from experienced team members.
- Help collect and analyze data related to equipment performance, downtime, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Support preventive maintenance and continuous improvement activities for electrical and automated systems.
- Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, controls, and production teams to identify and resolve equipment-related issues.
- Lead and promote healthy and safe work practices as required by regulatory agencies and Company policy.
