About The Position

This position involves working with a team to install, measure, monitor, collect, and analyze samples from forests planted under the USDA CRP program in the southeastern United States. Employees in intermittent positions are limited to working a maximum of 720 hours per fiscal year. The salary grade is UC, which is 'Unclassified' and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department. The Department of Forestry at Mississippi State University is part of the College of Forest Resources and the Forest and Wildlife Research Center, with faculty expertise in various forestry disciplines. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs and utilizes nearby research forests and wildlife refuges for teaching and research. Mississippi State University is an R1 institution and a land grant university located in Starkville, Mississippi.

Requirements

High School Diploma
Relevant experience related to the essential duties and responsibilities
Valid driver's license
Ability to drive long distances and spend long days in the field
Ability to work with others
Ability to walk long distances and carry 30+ pounds of gear
Knowledge of and use of MS Office
Good organizational skills
Ability to pay attention to detail
Able to work independently in remote locations

Nice To Haves

Experience with Forest Inventory
Experience with field forestry techniques and/or commensurate education in forestry
A B.S. in forestry or related subject completed or in-progress
Proficiency using a map and compass to navigate

Responsibilities

Measuring forest vegetation
Collecting soil and biomass samples
Processing and assisting with the processing and analysis of samples in the laboratory
Recording data with proper documentation
Traveling overnight to visit research sites located in AL, AR, LA, MS and TN
Scheduling field work several weeks ahead of time
Communicating availability for travel directly with Project Manager in a timely fashion
