About The Position

WSP is seeking an Intermediate Professional, Electrical Engineering for its Meridian, Idaho office. The role is part of the Electrical Studies, SCADA & Protection (ESSP) Team and supports projects involving electrical studies, SCADA, and system protection. Depending on project requirements and the individual’s expertise, the position may support a range of activities or specialize in a particular area. The work concerns conventional and renewable generation facilities, substations, transmission systems, and distribution systems. Candidates are expected to have a fundamental understanding of three-phase power and power system fundamentals, but are not expected to be proficient in every area listed. Work may include protective relaying; power system planning and design studies; networking and communications; and logic and control systems. The position also prepares technical reports, supports risk assessment and engineering design and remediation activities, assists with work plans and field/site coordination and permitting, and completes training on assigned tasks. Occasional project-related travel and work schedules extending beyond the typical workweek may be required. Relocation assistance is not available.

Requirements

  • BSEE, BSEET, or BSCE degree from an ABET-accredited university.
  • At least one year of industry experience performing design or device configuration in technical disciplines described in the role responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and their application to permitting and project-related work.
  • Analytical mindset and sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to express ideas effectively and professionally to engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Self-leadership, attention to detail and accuracy, multitasking ability, and ability to prioritize responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency in technical writing, office automation, software, technology, mathematical principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and ability to comply with WSP health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules that meet project-specific requirements and may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional project-related travel may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Power system coursework covering topics such as three-phase power, load flow and reactive compensation, protective relaying, symmetrical components, transmission-line theory, power system transients, dynamic stability, and power system electromagnetics.
  • Internship or work experience in technical areas and software listed in the job description.
  • Engineer In Training (EIT) certification, with the expectation of working toward professional engineering (PE) registration.
  • Experience mentoring others and/or providing technical leadership on customer-focused engineering projects.
  • Membership in or active participation in professional practice organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform services related to electrical studies, SCADA, and system protection, potentially supporting or specializing in one or more technical areas.
  • Perform protective-relaying activities such as short-circuit and symmetrical-component analysis, time-current coordination, protection scheme and criteria development, relay-setting calculations, SCADA integration, NERC compliance, and arc-flash analysis.
  • Perform power system planning studies, including power-flow and contingency analyses, generation-interconnection feasibility, voltage-stability analysis, dynamic-stability performance, batch-simulation automation, and work with models from NERC regional entities.
  • Perform design studies involving substation grounding, corona, electric and magnetic fields, insulation coordination, transient simulation, power quality, motor starting, and AC interference.
  • Design and configure network and communication paths for RTUs, protective relays, meters, HMIs, PLCs, and other SCADA equipment; develop basic communications-path specifications; and travel to project sites to troubleshoot and commission systems.
  • Develop and implement logic and control schemes for remote and local operation of power system equipment, develop programs on relevant platforms, and travel to project sites to test and commission control schemes.
  • Write technical reports summarizing analysis, findings, and conclusions, and produce complete, accurate, concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, and provide input and analysis for design concepts, construction, mitigation, improvement, and remediation projects.
  • Assist with work-plan preparation and coordination of field/site work and permitting.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and follow WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
