Requirements

  • College diploma (DEC) in theatre production (stage lighting and techniques) or a related field, given the technical nature of the role and the required knowledge of stage lighting.
  • Five (5) or more years’ experience required to ensure solid command of essential skills and knowledge needed for lighting design.
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

Responsibilities

  • Design lighting layouts, produce original visual effects and co-ordinate the setup and verification of assigned equipment to meet production requirements.
  • Perform Lighting Technician duties.
  • Develop and design plans and diagrams for lighting and original visual effects to meet production requirements.
  • Assess electric power requirements and provide recommendations to the relevant people regarding setups and power supply.
  • Act as a technical adviser to production and creative teams, recommending best methods to achieve high-quality artistic and technical results.
  • Co-ordinate and guide team members responsible for producing, preparing, setting up, operating and dismantling technical equipment.
  • Review and implement technical plans and diagrams.
  • Ensure the safety of lighting setups and team operations, providing contingency solutions as required.
  • Anticipate and secure necessary equipment and technical gear according to instructions or established practices so as to meet production requirements; report any irregularities to the relevant people.
  • Evaluate equipment performance as needed and draft summary reports.
  • Maintain strict quality control over all technical outputs.
  • Take corrective action when established standards are not met.
  • Perform immediate technical repairs during equipment failures to restore service quickly, keeping relevant team members informed.
  • Attend planning or production meetings as needed.
  • Assist, as needed, in reviewing and/or developing operating methods and technical standards.
  • Conduct site visits to determine technical and logistical requirements for remote productions.
  • Report any breakdowns or defects in equipment or material to the relevant people.
  • Complete the appropriate forms and documents; share information verbally or in writing to ensure proper followup and to keep others informed.
  • Familiarize other employees with their duties and the work environment.
  • Carry out, as needed, all or part of the duties of another job classification within an equivalent or lower salary group, as well as other related duties.
