About The Position

Radio-Canada is looking for a Video Operator/Editor for our Ottawa-Gatineau station for the CBC Parliamentary Bureau. The selected candidate will perform the duties of a production specialist, contributing creativity to programming by innovating to produce distinctive visual effects within the scope and time constraints of the show. The role requires strong photography skills, significant content contribution, and bilingualism (English-French). Work is generally carried out according to CBC/Radio-Canada or industry-accepted standards, but there is some flexibility for independent judgment, decision-making, and initiative within established procedures. Tasks are performed under the direction of the program manager or other employees, but the candidate must be able to work without immediate supervision. Work is usually carried out within the established formats of the program, often under high-pressure conditions. In a supporting role for programming, you will understand client needs, design, and implement creative solutions. You anticipate technological trends and help position us as pioneers in broadcasting, ensuring we deliver programming to our audience conveniently. This role requires full-time on-site presence.

Requirements

  • A college diploma in television arts or equivalent industry experience.
  • Excellent technical knowledge and understanding of daily television production methods.
  • At least three (3) years of specialized experience in news and field broadcasting.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) required.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • A valid passport and availability for travel within Canada and internationally, including to high-risk regions such as war or insurrection zones.
  • Excellent knowledge of the following camera models: Sony PDW-750, Sony A7siii, A7Riv, A6600, Sony FX6, Sony FX9, GoPro.
  • Experience with two-way radios, duplex kits, Dejero, LiveU, Teradek, and voice recording devices.
  • Studio and multi-camera live environment experience as a cameraman.
  • Ability to edit recorded elements using appropriate editing systems.
  • Proficiency with Avid Media Composer; After Effects and Adobe Premiere knowledge is an asset.
  • Understanding of image composition and single-camera lighting.
  • Experience with live television and daily news production.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to assemble a report with minimal supervision while ensuring precision, quality, and originality.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian politics.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Creativity in problem-solving and strong initiative.
  • Flexibility to work variable schedules and availability for unexpected and frequent overtime, including weekends.
  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the daily operations of the CBC/Radio-Canada production center in Ottawa.
  • Knowledge of IT and new technologies (FTP, RCNG, iPhone, Google Environment, etc.).
  • Experience with social media publishing.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in all stages of planning, production, and styling for programs.
  • Edit news programs and reports.
  • Create and add new visual elements.
  • Create, edit, and mix new audio components.
  • Regularly enhance images, texts, and fonts by selecting and applying visual effects from software or hardware tools.
  • Prepare, adjust, and set up field cameras to ensure optimal visual and technical quality under given circumstances.
  • Light the subject or scene, compose shots, and record broadcast material using shoulder-mounted cameras.
  • Ensure visual and audio elements meet technical and aesthetic standards for editing.
  • Produce all recorded elements, including shot lists.
  • Ask prepared questions to filmed individuals.
  • Prepare documentation for foreign assignments.
  • Perform tasks associated with equivalent or lower-level positions.
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance on the field.
