About The Position

A felony intake attorney is assigned to a specific letter or specialty division and conducts intakes on all cases assigned to that division including doing live interviews on cases involving crimes of violence. The intake attorney makes a filing decision on all these cases and prepares the file for review by the Chief of their division. Intake attorneys consult with law enforcement as needed to conduct intakes. On some occasions, intake attorneys also speak with defense counsel on matters that may bear on filing decisions. As part of the intake process, intake ASAs order evidence including but not limited to 911 calls, body worn camera footage, video and photos, and medical or business records. They also screen cases for enhancements, order certified copies of convictions if the conviction is an element of the offense and add/update the witness list in the Case Management System (CMS). All felony letter and specialty division intake ASAs make up a rotation to act as the daytime duty prosecutor. Other occasional duties include PP court coverage when the PP Court ASA is out, requesting new or updating existing form codes and creating citations. Intake ASAs are also assigned to specific law enforcement agency districts where they act as a liaison with the Law Enforcement Officers in that district; in their role as a liaison, the intake ASA is expected to attend regular office hours at their district, as well as occasionally attend roll call meetings. Assistant State Attorneys represent the State of Florida in all criminal and civil cases as prescribed by law and at the pleasure and direction of the elected State Attorney. The Office of the State Attorney for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit is responsible for prosecuting all criminal violations of state law that occur throughout the Circuit, which encompasses all of Hillsborough County, including the incorporated cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City. In addition to the primary responsibility of prosecuting criminal offenses, our office is actively involved in a variety of community organizations dedicated to preventing crime, reducing recidivism, and supporting victims. Our office also proactively engages in the community in order to improve communication, facilitate transparency, and promote trust with the citizens of Hillsborough County.
