Insulator (Heat and Frost)

TractionToronto, ON
$35 - $45

About The Position

We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Insulator (Heat and Frost) to join our mechanical insulation team. This role is designed for a professional who holds or is looking to finish their requirements to achieve their Red Seal Endorsement (RSE). As an Insulator, you play a critical role in energy conservation, fire protection, and process control for commercial and industrial facilities. Whether you are a certified Journeyperson or a senior apprentice in your final year, you will be expected to work to the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), ensuring that all systems are protected against thermal loss, condensation, and fire hazards with surgical precision.

Requirements

  • Certification Status: Must be a Journeyperson or a Senior Apprentice currently looking to finish their requirements to achieve their Red Seal Endorsement (RSE).
  • Technical Proficiency: Expert understanding of thermal dynamics (conduction, convection, radiation) and the chemical properties of various insulation materials.
  • Mathematical Competency: Proficiency in "Trade Math" for calculating surface areas and creating precise templates for metal jacketing and fittings.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying temperature extremes (from boiler rooms to cold storage).
  • Attention to Detail: A commitment to creating airtight, moisture-proof seals and high-quality aesthetic finishes on exposed piping and ductwork.

Responsibilities

  • System Assessment & Layout: Read and interpret blueprints and specifications to determine the required insulation types and thickness for piping, tanks, vessels, and ductwork.
  • Material Selection & Application: Select and install appropriate materials, including fiberglass, mineral wool, calcium silicate, elastomeric foam, and cellular glass, based on temperature and environmental requirements.
  • Protective Jacketing & Finishing: Measure, cut, and fabricate protective finishes, including aluminum and stainless steel jacketing, PVC covers, and specialized mastics.
  • Removable Insulation Covers: Measure and fabricate custom removable insulation blankets for valves, flanges, and equipment requiring frequent maintenance.
  • Firestopping & Smoke Seals: Apply fire-rated materials to penetrations in fire-separated walls and floors to ensure building code compliance.
  • Asbestos Abatement (As Required): Assist in the safe removal or encapsulation of hazardous materials following strict provincial health and safety regulations.
  • Safety & Scaffolding: Work safely from ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts. Adhere to strict PPE requirements, particularly respiratory protection when handling fibrous or chemical materials.
  • Mentorship: If certified, provide technical instruction and sign off on the hours of junior apprentices. If finishing requirements, work with our Journeypersons to master Major Work Activities (MWAs) such as complex layout for metal fittings (elbows, tees, and heads).

Benefits

  • The Path to Completion: For those finishing their RSE, we offer exposure to a wide range of applications—from cryogenic systems to high-pressure steam—ensuring you are fully prepared for the Interprovincial Exam.
  • Competitive Compensation: Wages that reflect your technical expertise and the critical role you play in reducing energy costs and environmental impact.
  • National Mobility: An RSE credential that is recognized in every province and territory, allowing you to work in refineries, hospitals, power plants, and high-rises across Canada.
