About The Position

Santa Fe College's Upward Bound is a federally funded program serving first-generation and/or low-income students at Bradford High School. Its focus is high school success, persistence, and fostering a college-going culture. The Upward Bound Instructor provides academic instruction, tutoring, homework support, and college preparation guidance in an assigned subject area. Subject areas may include English, mathematics, history, social science, sciences, Spanish, and computer technologies. The instructor must be committed to helping students succeed and able to work a flexible schedule to meet program needs.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject matter area.
At least two years of closely related work experience.
Skill in the assigned academic discipline and ability to deliver interactive classroom instruction.
Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate Upward Bound program needs.
Ability to work successfully in a multicultural environment.
Adaptability, flexibility, and ability to respond positively to change in a rapidly growing environment.
Professional, diplomatic, empathetic, and tactful communication skills.

Experience teaching and/or tutoring high school-aged students.

Preference for qualified individuals who have overcome barriers similar to those experienced by Upward Bound participants.

Responsibilities

Provide classroom instruction in the assigned subject area in accordance with Upward Bound program objectives, curriculum, and student progress.
Assist with developing and preparing curriculum, lesson plans, pre- and post-testing, course syllabi, and other course materials.
Monitor students' access to and use of academic support resources, such as CANVAS courses and ALEKS.
Mentor students in preparation for college by providing leadership, information, and guidance about college and college culture.
Help students develop study skills and test-taking strategies.
Provide group and individualized tutoring and homework support for students in grades 9–12.
Inform the Coordinator of academic or disciplinary issues that hinder tutorial or academic success.
Participate in TRIO and other professional development opportunities.
Assist with documentation and accurate, timely record keeping related to student conduct, attention, and academic progress, as well as other required forms and information.
Participate in Upward Bound team activities, including training sessions, field trips, staff meetings, and other events as necessary.
Comply with College rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws and regulations governing public employees, including requirements concerning document retention, FERPA, and confidentiality.
Protect the privacy, security, and confidentiality of records and sensitive information in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
Provide courteous, informed, accessible, and professional service.
Perform other duties as assigned.
