About The Position

The University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) seeks applicants for its Instructors and Professor of Practice positions for its open instruction pool. This pool is for part-time, temporary, limited-duration teaching appointments, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years. Potential courses may include undergraduate classes in multimedia, reporting, advertising, broadcast, online journalism, public relations, photojournalism, design, media studies context courses, and other related subjects within the SOJC portfolio. Successful candidates will possess professional experience relevant to a field within the School of Journalism and Communication, demonstrate a capacity for quality teaching, and be committed to working effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff. Some courses may offer remote/hybrid options based on programmatic needs and the field of study. If hired as a pro tem professor of practice, the individual will also act as a liaison between their professional field and the University of Oregon.

Requirements

  • Master's degree (significant professional experience may substitute in exceptional circumstances for Instructor rank).
  • For Professor of Practice rank: substantial experience equivalent to a tenured professor (minimum of 12 years), a national/international reputation for excellence reflected in significant accomplishments, a profile of accumulated professional accomplishments, and a rich and extensive background in the field.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and instruction.

Nice To Haves

  • A record of excellence in establishing and maintaining partnerships with professional stakeholders in the field.
  • Substantial professional experience in the subject to be taught.
  • Experience teaching in a classroom setting, creating and delivering training programs, or other related experience in instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate classes in areas such as multimedia, reporting, advertising, broadcast, online journalism, public relations, photojournalism, design, and media studies.
  • Serve as a liaison between the professional field and the University of Oregon (for Professor of Practice roles).
  • Work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Develop and deliver training programs or other related instructional experiences.
