About The Position

This is a 9-month term position for a Mathematics Faculty member at the Chattanooga State campus. The primary role involves instructing freshman and sophomore level mathematics courses. Teaching may occur during the day or evening, in various formats (online asynchronous, on-ground, virtual synchronous), and at multiple locations, including off-campus sites and local high schools. Responsibilities include facilitating classroom instruction, evaluating students, monitoring and communicating student progress, utilizing the Learning Management System (LMS) and online educational systems (ALEKS, MyLab Math, MyOpenMath, etc.), assigning grades, maintaining records, counseling and advising students on academic preparation and career goals, working to retain students, maintaining required office and Math Center hours, and providing out-of-class academic assistance.

Requirements

  • An earned Master’s degree in Mathematics or Statistics from a regionally accredited institution or a Master’s degree with 18 graduate semester hours in Mathematics or Statistics.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching Mathematics courses in the department including Learning Support, Number Concepts for Teachers, Geometry Concepts for Teachers, College Algebra, Precalculus Algebra, Precalculus Trigonometry, Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations.
  • Previous community college or high school teaching experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Mathematics Department within the Math and Sciences Division for the Teaching Excellence strategic theme.
  • Assist in the selection of texts, supplemental documents, supplies, and other learning resources, including Open Educational Resources (OER).
  • Develop supplemental instructional materials.
  • Use current technology in preparation, creation, and delivery of instruction.
  • Create and revise courses and/or curricula as needed.
  • Maintain updated course syllabi.
  • Remain current within the field of assigned instruction, related occupational areas and technologies.
  • Acquire, maintain, and apply knowledge of current instructional methodologies and materials.
  • Attend scheduled college, divisional, and departmental professional development and in-service activities.
  • Participate in the annual faculty evaluation process.
  • Respect the rights of students and access to educational opportunities.
  • Assist in recruitment, selection, orientation, and evaluation of potential students.
  • Assist in formal and informal placement activities for employment and/or transfer to four-year institutions.
  • Support student activities.
  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of college personnel as assigned.
  • Participate in accreditation, assessment, and performance funding processes.
  • Support and participate in college/division/department committees, organizations, and/or task force groups to make recommendations in the College’s decision-making processes.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with colleagues.
  • Strengthen relationships between the college and the community through community outreach activities.
  • Attend required college, division, and department meetings.
  • Support the Academic Advising Center.
  • Stay current with the relevant Tennessee Transfer Pathways.
  • Participate in regular reviews of relevant Tennessee Transfer Pathways.
  • Assist with college-wide advising as needed.
  • Familiarity with holistic support for students outside the classroom, including Admissions and Records, Enrollment Service Center, High School Programs, Recruiting and Orientation, Career Services, Student Support Center, Tutoring Services, Student Conduct, Student Life, Multicultural and International Services, Adult Student Services, and the Center for Access and Disability Services.
  • Ensure that services and activities promote accessibility.
  • Structure student experiences to ensure relevance in academic, student life, and co-curricular activities.
  • Promote, support, and participate in student recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Support the responsible fiscal stewardship of the funds allocated to the Mathematics Department within the Math and Sciences Division.
  • Embrace and promote the College's goals related to organizational culture and community.
  • Support the Math and Sciences Division’s efforts to utilize best practices to provide fair-minded services and support for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintain an office environment that is open, inviting, and professional.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
