GBCC Non-Credit Instructor - Industrial Print Reading and Metrology

Community College System of New Hampshire•Portsmouth, NH

About The Position

Great Bay Community College’s Business & Training Center seeks an instructor to teach three non-credit courses: CBAM110M: Industrial Print Reading, NCBM111 Metrology Fundamentals, and NCBM 112 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) Fundamentals. These hands-on courses introduce students to mechanical measurement techniques and engineering blueprint reading, preparing them for quality, inspection, and manufacturing roles. The instructor will teach students to interpret mechanical drawings, including tolerances, welding symbology, and GD&T, and to perform precise measurements using industry-standard instruments. The role combines lecture, discussion, and laboratory activities, with two theory hours and three lab hours weekly. The instructor will develop learning activities and assessments, provide feedback, evaluate progress against the stated course objectives, maintain records and grades, and ensure safe handling of precision measurement tools and lab equipment. The position is contract faculty and reports to the Director of Workforce Development. Applicants must reside in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Rhode Island to meet CCSNH eligibility requirements. An employment offer is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. • Demonstrated experience reading and interpreting engineering blueprints, including tolerances, GD&T, and welding symbols, per ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Hands-on professional experience using precision measurement instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, dial indicators, and gaging equipment in manufacturing, quality control, or inspection.
  • Working knowledge of orthographic projection, multi-view drawings, and dimensioning practices.
  • Experience conducting or overseeing part inspection against engineering specifications.
  • Ability to teach foundational and applied metrology and print-reading concepts to students with little or no prior experience.
  • Strong communication and hands-on lab facilitation skills.
  • Residency within Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Rhode Island is required for CCSNH employment eligibility.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience preferred; college-level instruction is a plus.
  • ASME GD&T certification, such as GDTP, preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with CAD software and quality documentation practices, including inspection reports and SPC, is a plus.
  • Application materials may include an optional portfolio or samples of CAD/design work, such as models, drawings, or projects.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver instruction in engineering drawing standards, visualization, line usage, drawing layout, and notes.
  • Teach orthographic projection, multi-view drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and drawing annotations per ASME Y14.5.
  • Teach GD&T reading and application, assembly drawings and parts lists, welding processes and symbols, and thread specifications and annotations.
  • Lead hands-on lab instruction in measurement tools and gaging methods, including calipers, scales, tape measures, protractors, micrometers, height gages, surface and angle plates, indicators, thread gages, Go/NoGo gages, blocks, and pins.
  • Plan and facilitate a blend of in-class and online lectures, discussions, and lab activities (two theory hours and three lab hours weekly).
  • Design collaborative and individual projects, in-class activities, and real-world inspection scenarios.
  • Teach students to compare drawing dimensions and tolerances with physical part measurements to verify compliance with design specifications.
  • Instruct students on selecting appropriate inspection methods for mechanical components and drawings.
  • Guide students in preparing accurate inspection reports documenting measurement results and interpretations.
