About The Position

The Department of Recreation Studies at snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College is recruiting an instructor to teach in our new Indigenous Leadership in Recreation program. We are seeking an instructor for the following 1-credit courses: RECR 1105 Leadership & Facilitation in Indigenous Recreation (Spring 2027), RECR 1110 Indigenous Recreation Programming & Events (Spring 2027), and RECR 1115 Networking & Partnerships in Indigenous Recreation (Spring 2027). A successful applicant new to the LFA employment group may be entitled to begin December 1, 2026, to allow for course preparation and set-up prior to the start of classes. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the growing Recreation Studies department at snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College. We are seeking instructors with a strong record of teaching adult learners, and active relationships within Indigenous communities. These courses are taught in a mixed mode configuration, with some courses delivered online, while others in-community. Successful candidates will have experience living and working within Indigenous communities and a good understanding of diverse Indigenous value systems, cultural practices, protocols, and ceremony. Land-based experiences and knowledge are considered an asset. Experience working with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers is also considered an asset.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree (PhD preferred) in Leisure Studies, Recreation, Leadership, Adult Education, Public Administration or related field or an equivalent combination of education, professional experience, and lived experience including traditional and cultural knowledge.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities using community-based/participatory methodologies.
  • Has worked in the field of Indigenous Recreation and / or Community Recreation for a minimum of 5 years (full time or equivalent)
  • Demonstrates a commitment to excellence in his/her work
  • Possesses strong sector connections within the recreation field, participating in professional associations, board membership and/or community organizations.
  • Applicants must have experience facilitating or teaching youth and adult learners in the recreation environment.
  • Employees of Langara College must reside in British Columbia
  • Applicants must be willing to work in a collaborative faculty team environment and participate in related departmental and college-wide activities.
  • The successful instructor will engage in building a positive learning community within their course and achieve innovative ways of connecting theory to practical situations for learners.
  • The successful candidate is a recognized leader in Indigenous Recreation and / or Community Recreation and is prepared to actively promote Recreation Studies programs to potential students.
  • In addition, the successful candidate will have the desire and administrative and leadership skills to take on leadership roles within the Department such as Program Coordinator and/or Department Chair in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • An ideal candidate would have existing working relationships or familiarity with the Nations who co-designed the program (Musqueam, K'omoks, Tla'amin Homalco Nations), or working relationships with other Nations in BC.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have experience teaching Indigenous learners at the post-secondary level (on-line, mixed mode or classroom).
  • While applications for individual courses will be considered, preference will be given to the candidate able to teach all of the courses listed above.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the preparation and delivery of lecture material; the design, set-up, and delivery of group and individual activities; and the preparation, delivery, and grading of assignments and exams
  • Liaise with participating Nations/communities in organizing class needs
  • Utilize digital technology to deliver the course material such as Brightspace, Zoom, etc.
  • Utilize technology for administrative purposes such as Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, Zoom etc.
  • Maintain regular weekly office hours on campus and online for student advising and participation in related departmental and college-wide activities.
  • Maintain currency in relevant subject areas, including global and/or local trends, issues, and opportunities
  • Maintain collegial working relationships
  • As appropriate, actively seek opportunities to integrate students and learning into organizations and/or the community
  • On an as needed basis, participate actively in program design and review
  • Candidates are required to have participated in a variety of recreation experiences that are related to their area of expertise and demonstrate a passion for (and leadership in) community recreation.
  • The successful candidate understands and is dedicated to community recreation and is able to clearly articulate his/her recreation and teaching philosophy.
