Instructor, English as a Second Language (ESL) Temporary Full Time-12 Month
About The Position
To provide English As a Second Language (ESL) classroom instruction to adult students for classes offered at a correctional center and other locations in Pender County. The teaching assignment for this position includes a combination of day and evening classes. Instruction integrates assessment-driven instruction focused on practical workplace and life skills. The ESL program utilizes scaffolded, adult-tailored teaching strategies to build English fluency, employability and life skills, and self-confidence. This is a Temporary Full Time position with an expiration date of June 30, 3027 with the opportunity to be extended.
Requirements
- Ability to identify students' work and life language needs using formal testing and informal assessments, and to provide continuous, proactive support to ensure student progress and success.
- Ability to tailor teaching methods for various learning styles and effectively instruct foundational ESL students, including those with no prior English or reading skills.
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with the ability to pursue a teaching certification or adult education credential within two years of hire.
Nice To Haves
- Master's degree in Adult Education or closely related educational field from an accredited college or university.
- TESOL or K-12 teacher certification.
- Experience teaching adult ESL Beginners.
- Experience teaching employability skills.
Responsibilities
- Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students
- Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons
- Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores
- Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate
- Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements
- Participate in professional development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
- Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines
- Participate on committees and in other institutional activities and programs.
- Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format;
- Oversee and participate in the field studies and assignment; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate
- Meet documentation requirements and deadlines as set forth by the program coordinator
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
