About The Position

The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa's Department of Linguistics is seeking an outstanding Instructor of American Sign Language (ASL) to begin in Spring 2027. This is a non-tenure track, annually renewable position with a rank of I-2, contingent upon satisfactory performance and need. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to student learning and to building or maintaining connections with the local Deaf community. The department offers BA, MA, and PhD programs in Linguistics, with an optional ASL Concentration at the BA level.

Requirements

Either: (a) M.A. degree in American Sign Language, Sign Language Teaching, Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Education, or a related field; or (b) B.A. degree in American Sign Language, Sign Language Teaching, Deaf Studies, Sign Linguistics or a related field with three years of full or part-time teaching ASL at the college or university level.
Native or near-native proficiency in ASL.
Demonstrated involvement in the Deaf community.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Nice To Haves

5 years or more of experience teaching ASL at the university level.
Experience with curriculum development.
ASLTA certification.
Familiarity with ASL-English interpreter training requirements.

Responsibilities

Teach 24 credits per academic year in American Sign Language (ASL) at all undergraduate levels.
Develop curriculum and teaching materials toward a full four-year ASL program.
Advise students.
Coordinate curricula, and ensure articulation between levels and between UH campuses.
Oversee placement exams, course equivalency evaluations, back credits and language waiver petitions.
Contribute service at the department, college, university, and community levels.
Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
