About The Position

The Barry Robinson Center is a residential treatment facility serving military-connected youth ages 11–17. Our Center provides a holistic, therapeutic environment that helps youth and their families begin the path to healing, growth, and long-term success. The Instructional Support Teacher position provides consistent instructional coverage and maintains instructional continuity. Follows the lesson plans provided by teachers when they are absent. On days when no teachers are out, the Instructional Support Teacher may assist with educational testing, tutor individual students as assigned, or participate in special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required.
  • Be eligible for Virginia state licensure or working towards licensure.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with adolescents, particularly those with emotional or behavioral challenges, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily education services that meet the needs of students: Check in daily with Assistant Director of Education or designee regarding assignments for the school day.
  • Follow detailed lesson plans left by teacher. If no lesson plan is provided, utilize emergency lesson plans as needed.
  • Leave detailed notes regarding pertinent information from the school day to include a summary of any behavioral concerns and student progress for each class.
  • Document attendance for each class.
  • Provide academic support during experiential learning activities and educational outings as assigned.
  • Work with individual students and small groups to reinforce concepts and provide academic remediation and support as assigned.
  • Assist in maintaining an organized, clean and safe classroom learning environment.
  • Assist teachers with classroom preparation and related tasks as assigned.
  • Assist with administering educational evaluation as assigned.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned.
  • May need to substitute for other Education staff members at times.
  • Attend departmental meetings and supervision meetings in order to share information and problem solve as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with BRC staff (education, residential, and clinical) any student related concerns or questions as indicated.
  • Initiate and participate in special treatment procedures in order to maintain the safety of the students and others using crisis management skills, de-escalation skills, and hands-on intervention if needed.
  • Review previous education records received upon admission.
  • Complete initial Individual Instruction Plan within ten days of admission and provide monthly updates to share with multidisciplinary team during monthly treatment team meetings to review student progress and plan for discharge.
  • Communicate at least monthly with student’s parents/guardians to share updates on student progress and plan for eventual discharge and transition to the next educational setting and document this communication in student record.
  • Ensure that all student-related documentation aligns in terms of the specific information provided and the accuracy of this information throughout all documentation generated during the student’s enrollment in the BRC education program.
  • Complete final education reports and collect supporting documents for students being discharged.
