About The Position

Under the supervision of the principal and supervising teacher, the Instructional Paraprofessional assists with the daily supervision and instruction of students. The role supports classroom instruction and student needs, helps maintain safe and structured settings, and prepares instructional materials according to teacher expectations.

Requirements

• Ability to work closely with teachers.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and adults.
• Meet at least one of the following criteria: complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education; attain an Associate degree at minimum; or demonstrate knowledge and ability to assist with instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local academic assessment.

Responsibilities

• Follow the directions of the teacher and/or principal.
• Supervise students in instructional situations as prescribed by the teacher and/or principal.
• Consult with the teacher about individual students’ academic expectations.
• Become familiar with the academic standards used to monitor student progress and implement those standards.
• Use time efficiently when working with student groups so each child receives needed assistance.
• Use good judgment when interpreting lessons and supporting teacher instruction in group settings.
• Assist the teacher and/or principal in meeting each child’s needs.
• Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, playgrounds, and during rest time in a safe, structured, and positive manner that supports teacher and/or principal expectations.
• Consult with the teacher and/or principal about behavioral expectations for children in different situations.
• Observe the quality and style of teacher-prepared materials and maintain the same standards when preparing materials.
• Correctly operate office machines needed to prepare materials.
• Prepare materials efficiently and ensure they are ready when needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
