About The Position

Coordinates the instructional design services for HSU’s online programs. Instructional designer ensures pedagogical and design excellence in all online courses. Collaborates and secures all necessary services, permissions, professional, legal, state, and national compliances in all online courses. Provides training and resources for faculty and staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • One year of related experience is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in learning management systems (preferably Canvas) and adaptable and ongoing skill in learning and implementing new learning technologies.
  • Ability to multi-task high-priority projects, organize details, and meet impending deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems, Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Project Management software; Order processing systems, and Contact Management systems.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.
  • Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in education, education technology, instructional design, or related field preferred but not required.
  • Experience in a related field is favored over a graduate-level degree.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and develops multimedia instructional materials for computer-based training, and other delivery platforms.
  • Oversee the instructional design process of the Department of Online Education.
  • Coordinate course design and implementation of effective pedagogy in the development of the highest quality online courses.
  • Coordinate all course review processes to ensure online courses satisfy the Hardin-Simmons University course development rubric, accessibility standards, quality expectations, and applicable distance education requirements.
  • Practices an instructional design model that facilitates the cohort process, equipping faculty to design and develop high-quality, compliant courses while fostering communities of inquiry and practice and scaling support to meet varying instructional design needs.
  • Communicates instructional design processes, timelines, and deadlines in advance through appropriate communication channels.
  • Serves as our learning management system (LMS) liaison and informs the department of online education and IT of needs and processes necessary to effectively implement and support our LMS.
  • Develops and maintains templates, resources, and design aids that promote consistency and efficiency.
  • Facilitates the resolution, recording, and tracking of our help desk ticket system.
  • Proactively provides updates, information, and awareness of instructional design activity.
  • Develops and enacts short and long-term goals for the instructional design processes.
  • Keeps current on instructional design trends, practices, and state-of-the-art processes to ensure the highest quality instructional design for Hardin-Simmons University.
  • Identifies and plans appropriate instructional design strategies and objectives based on analysis of tasks, learners, and subject matter.
  • Determines content sequence and creates content outlines and treatment approaches for written, visual, and audio content.
  • Conducts task analyses and determines performance criteria.
  • Develops evaluation strategies and instruments.
  • Coordinates with instructional writers during preliminary project discussions to ensure appropriate content development.
  • Advises and assists video and art production staff, project editors, vendors, authors, and subject matter experts, ensuring team conformance with instructional objectives and design.
  • Designs and develops related materials such as workbooks, manuals, and instructor guides.
  • Monitor federal, state, accreditation, and institutional requirements related to distance education and make recommendations to ensure ongoing compliance and instructional excellence.
  • Provide training, resources, consultation, and course review support to faculty related to online teaching best practices, accessibility, course quality standards, and Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) requirements.
