About The Position

The Instructional Designer, under general supervision of the Director, Faculty Teaching & Learning Center, provides professional-level instructional design and academic technology consultation to faculty and academic departments to enhance teaching and learning across online, hybrid, and face-to-face modalities. The incumbent collaborates with faculty to analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate technology-enhanced curricula and instructional materials grounded in pedagogical best practices. The role applies instructional design methodologies and knowledge of academic technologies to improve course quality, accessibility, and student engagement. The position independently manages multiple projects and priorities, develops training and resources, and partners with IT and campus stakeholders to support the effective integration of instructional technologies. This position directly contributes to faculty development, student success, and institutional goals related to digital learning and instructional innovation.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Working knowledge of emerging online learning modalities including, but not limited to, open courseware, live virtual courseware, and other software platforms in support of virtual and classroom interactive learning.
  • Working knowledge of instructional design methodologies, pedagogy, learning management systems, and best practices for classroom, online, and hybrid learning.
  • Strong knowledge of instructional methodologies and academic technology.
  • Strong project planning and organizational skills to plan, organize, and manage projects, including timelines, resources, and team coordination.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with various stakeholders and develop instructional materials and content.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate, interpret, and advise on effective redesign of curriculum and course materials to develop sound conclusions and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, or closely related field.
  • Prior experience as an Instructional Designer.
  • Experience with audio-visual technologies and media production, including recording, editing, and integrating audio/video content to support instructional delivery and digital learning environments.
  • Experience with website design and content management.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, ADA) and experience applying accessibility principles to course materials and digital content.
  • Experience developing multimedia and digital learning objects using tools such as video editing software, screen capture tools, or authoring platforms (e.g., Articulate, Captivate, Camtasia).
  • Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) including course design, content development, and troubleshooting from an instructional perspective.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with faculty to design, redesign, and implement online and hybrid courses using instructional design frameworks (e.g., backward design, Quality Matters principles).
  • Consult with faculty and academic departments to analyze course objectives, instructional strategies, and learning outcomes to design and develop effective, technology-enhanced learning experiences.
  • Evaluate course structure, assessments, and instructional materials to recommend improvements that enhance alignment, engagement, and learning effectiveness.
  • Guide faculty in the pedagogically sound integration of the Learning Management System (LMS) and other instructional technologies into course delivery.
  • Provide individualized consultation and project support for course development initiatives, ensuring timely completion and alignment with best practices.
  • Assist faculty in developing measurable learning outcomes and aligning instructional activities and assessments accordingly.
  • Apply accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, ADA) to course design and provide recommendations to ensure inclusive learning environments.
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with faculty to assess needs, provide follow-up support, and evaluate course effectiveness post-implementation.
  • Design and develop multimedia instructional materials, including videos, tutorials, and digital learning objects, to support course delivery and faculty training.
  • Collaborate with faculty and technical staff to produce engaging, user-centered, and pedagogically sound digital content.
  • Review instructional materials and course content to ensure accessibility compliance and usability.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to enhance learner engagement, navigation, and content delivery.
  • Assist faculty in converting traditional materials into accessible, technology-enhanced formats.
  • Design, develop, and deliver training programs, workshops, and webinars on instructional design, LMS functionality, and academic technologies.
  • Facilitate one-on-one, small group, and large-scale training sessions in in-person and virtual formats.
  • Develop instructional resources, user guides, and documentation to support faculty adoption of technology and best practices.
  • Assess training effectiveness using feedback and data; refine content and delivery methods accordingly.
  • Research and integrate emerging trends and best practices in instructional technology and pedagogy into training offerings.
  • Evaluate instructional technologies and provide recommendations for selection, implementation, and integration into teaching and learning environments.
  • Collaborate with IT and campus stakeholders to support academic technology initiatives and LMS enhancements.
  • Participate in pilot testing and assessment of new and emerging instructional technologies.
  • Provide user support for LMS and instructional technologies with a focus on instructional application.
  • Develop and maintain FTLC’s web-based resources and online content to support faculty use of academic technologies.
