About The Position

The Instructional Designer, Contractor position will have a solid background in both instructional design and technical writing, with the ability to create engaging and effective learning materials and documentation. This is a 3-6 month contract role. The role involves applying adult learning and instructional design theories, practices, and methods to create effective learning products, ensuring they meet accessibility standards. It requires collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs) and Online Development to design learning activities, develop storyboards and scripts, and perform quality control checks. The position also involves overseeing version control, project tracking, and documentation for curriculum assets. Additionally, the role includes re-working technical content into accessible learning materials, validating accuracy with SMEs, and adhering to departmental editing and style guide practices. The Instructional Designer will also liaise with editors, work with the Technical Content Supervisor to design course vision, perform learner profiles and client needs analyses, analyze existing content for improvements and gaps, and determine content requirements for new courses. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • One year certificate in Instructional Design or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
  • 3+ years instructional design experience, ideally working with technical content
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Teams
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • This is a remote, work from home position
  • Travel might be required from time to time

Nice To Haves

  • Post Secondary Degree or Certificate in Instructional Design, Curriculum Development, Education or related field
  • Diploma or Certificate in Technical Writing or Plain Language
  • Ability to write/translate to French is an asset
  • Background working in trades training and course development
  • Excellent writing, organization and communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of Articulate 360
  • Basic knowledge of D2L
  • Basic knowledge of SharePoint
  • Intermediate understanding of exam and assessment methodologies

Responsibilities

  • Apply adult learning and instructional design theories, practices, and methods to create effective learning products that meet project learning objectives and stakeholder expectations
  • Ensure learning products meet accessibility standards
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to identify learner-critical knowledge, skills and behaviour
  • Collaborate with Online Development to design effective and aligned online learning activities
  • Develop storyboards and instructional scripts
  • Perform quality control checks on deliverables
  • Oversee version control, project tracking boards, and documentation for all curriculum assets
  • Re-work technical and complex content into accessible, engaging learning
  • Collaborate with SMEs to validate accuracy
  • Apply departmental editing and style guide practices
  • Liaise with editors
  • Work closely with the Technical Content Supervisor to design the course vision
  • Perform preliminary learner profiles and client needs analyses
  • Analyze existing and potential content, focusing on areas for improvement and identifying possible content gaps
  • Determine content requirements for new courses where content does not already exist
  • Other duties as assigned
