About The Position

The Adult Career, Community, Education & Enrichment (ACE) Program is a regional program in Charles County for students ages 18–21 working toward the Maryland Certificate of Program Completion after meeting the Alternative Academic Achievement Standards and/or assessments. The program uses hands-on, real-world learning experiences to prepare students for employment, community participation, and independent living. Scaffolded instruction in work readiness, community engagement, and activities of daily living is tailored to individual student needs through the IEP process. Instruction focuses on supported or competitive employment, pre-vocational and daily living skills, community access and navigation, recreation and leisure, and self-advocacy and personal goal setting.

The Instructional Assistant supports the teacher with instructional activities and classroom safety, reinforces instruction with individuals or small groups, and helps prepare lessons. The role may involve toileting assistance depending on the assigned area or program, and substitute coverage may be required. The position is a 10-month, non-exempt role.

Requirements

• High school diploma required.
• Experience working with children.
• Ability to work in an instructional support role with elementary-, middle-, or high-school-aged children.
• Excellent human relations skills.
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
• Knowledge of children's developmental stages.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to plan developmentally appropriate activities as directed by the teacher.
• Must be at least 18 years old and have been out of high school for at least two years to work in middle and high schools.

Responsibilities

• Assist the teacher in planning instructional activities and maintaining a safe and orderly environment.
• Work with individuals or small groups to provide instructional reinforcement after the teacher delivers instruction.
• Assist the teacher in preparing for lessons.
• Maintain regular, on-time attendance.
• Provide substitute coverage as needed.
• Perform related duties and other duties as assigned by the principal.
• Provide toileting assistance when required by the assigned area or program.
