About The Position

St. Thomas More School, Allentown is seeking an Instructional Assistant (Student Services) to assist assigned classroom teacher(s) in instructing and supervising students. The role contributes to the development of students into mature, able, and responsible individuals. This is a part-time, non-exempt position reporting to the assigned Teacher and Director of Student Services.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • A minimum of 2 years of college or related coursework in child development.
  • Effective oral and written expression.
  • Ability to communicate and work with students and staff.
  • Ability to work independently with students and supervise students in the absence of the teacher.
  • Must be familiar with academic subjects and be able to utilize classroom materials and technology.
  • Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Fingerprint Check as required under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Act 153 of 2014 (No less than 1 year old.)
  • Attendance at the online Protecting God's Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with instructional activities by working with students individually and in small groups on language arts, math, practical skills, handwriting, arts and crafts, self-care skills, behavior management, and other areas.
  • Monitors students and continues classroom activities if the teacher is interrupted and/or involved in other program activities.
  • Monitors/supervises students out of the classroom as assigned.
  • Assists in preparing bulletin boards and other classroom instructional materials.
  • Reviews daily schedule(s) with assigned teacher(s).
  • Keeps daily attendance records and performs clerical work related to classroom programs.
  • Collects and corrects student work as appropriate.
  • Prepares, distributes, and collects notes to parents.
  • Assists students and teachers with preparing copies, technological needs, and materials needed for instruction.
  • Escorts student(s) throughout the building as needed.
  • Attends specials with students if required.
  • Eats lunch with students or supervises if required.
  • Assists in making contacts for field trips.
  • Assists with special projects and evening programs as requested by the classroom teacher, Director of Student Services, or building principal (back to school bash, meet the teacher night, P/T conferences).
  • Monitors playground activities and assists with the arrival and dismissal of students.
  • Prepares, adapts, and modifies educational materials and supplies to enhance student understanding and learning.
  • Attends and successfully completes all staff development training and/or meetings as required by the employer.
  • Practices appropriate hygienic precautions for students, self, and the work environment.
  • Performs other duties as requested by assigned classroom teacher(s) and/or Director of Student Services, and/or building principal.
