About The Position

This position involves assisting a certificated teacher in the instruction, supervision, and training of individual or groups of students. The role includes performing a variety of instructional support and student care activities, as well as maintaining an effective learning environment. Employees work under the direct to general supervision of a certificated teacher and/or school site administrator within established policies and procedures. This classification provides significant instructional support to enhance the educational environment and requires positive interaction with students and staff. A key aspect of this role is assisting physically handicapped students with toileting and feeding needs.

Requirements

  • Command of the English language.
  • Knowledge of pertinent academic areas and learning situations.
  • Knowledge of general needs and behaviors of students and student recreational activities.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions independently.
  • Ability to understand the needs of high school students and effectively relate to these needs in a learning or recreational situation.
  • Ability to learn the requirements of the students in the specific learning program to which assigned.
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Ability to supervise students in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including typewriter, copy machine, tape recorders, projectors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate classroom records and files.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships.
  • Completion of the twelfth grade, preferably supplemented by college level courses.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the required duties.
  • With special training, ability to perform toileting procedures.
  • Proficiency in basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills (certification required).

Nice To Haves

  • Skill to speak, read, and write a specified foreign language.

Responsibilities

  • Assist physically handicapped students in feeding needs including lifting.
  • Assist physically handicapped students in toileting needs including stall positioning, lifting, garments, and cleansing.
  • Supervise students to maintain an effective learning environment, noting behavioral problems.
  • Organize learning and/or instructional environments, setting up materials for daily activities, and maintaining neat and orderly classroom/instructional areas.
  • Administer and correct daily assignments, homework, etc.
  • Establish and maintain informational and operational records and files.
  • Assist in developing goals and objectives for each student according to curriculum and/or program requirements in conjunction with certificated staff.
  • Confer with teachers regarding students' progress, program evaluation, and problem areas, and assist in the development of lesson plans.
  • Supervise students during lunch hours, travel, and recreation periods.
  • Assist instructional personnel with mobility training activities.
  • Instruct students in various learning situations including basic academic subjects, vocational activities, self-help, and social integration.
  • Implement learning situations which may include individualized instruction, creating learning centers, and/or researching instructional programs for specific needs.
  • Prepare instructional materials for use in instructional activities, make copies, and gather resource information and materials.
  • Provide teacher(s) and school administrators with relevant feedback and information on students' progress through observation and daily contact, including performance time studies and data collection.
  • Escort students to and from transportation pick-up/delivery places on campus.
  • Assist teachers on field trips by helping students meet physical needs, supervision, and reinforcing learning situations.
  • Monitor loading/unloading of students on/off buses.
  • Perform related duties as required.
