About The Position

Under the direction of a teacher, this position performs a variety of duties to assist students, staff, and administrators in a split 1st & 2nd grade classroom. The role requires making independent judgments within prescribed policies, using good judgment in various situations including emergencies, and working effectively with a diverse range of students. The Instructional Assistant is expected to be a supportive member of the educational team, communicate effectively with students, maintain confidentiality, and continuously learn and implement program policies and job requirements through training and workshops. A key responsibility includes intervening and separating young children when necessary. Spanish language proficiency is preferred.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two years of experience working in an Early Childhood Education and/or preschool setting.
  • Oregon Driver's License, or ability to get to and from work in a timely manner and perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Must be certified with a Medic First Aid Card within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Other certifications/trainings as required to execute the Essential Functions and Duties and Responsibilities of this position (i.e. blood sugar testing, bee sting, dispensing of prescription medication).
  • All employees must be able to communicate in an effective manner.
  • Employees with English as a second language must be able to communicate their need for clarification and/or interpretation of directions.
  • Willingness to attend English class as requested by supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students, staff, and administrators.
  • Make independent judgments within prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Use good judgment in a variety of situations, including emergencies.
  • Work with a variety of students and demonstrate a willingness to gain necessary information and training.
  • Be an effective member of an educational support team.
  • Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Complete work within established timelines.
  • Communicate with the appropriate student age group, exercising both empathetic and disciplinarian approaches.
  • Maintain a confidential, non-preferential, and non-judgmental attitude towards students, staff, and the program.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, staff, and the general public.
  • Learn and implement policies for students of the program.
  • Remain current on job requirements by attending training, classes, or workshops.
  • Intervene and separate quibbling toddler-size children.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Keep current on department issues.
  • Learn and state guidelines that govern the department.
  • Schedule meetings and maintain working relationships with various external entities (CCD, Visiting Health Nurse, Teen Parent Care Manager, School Staff, Early Intervention).
  • Keep licensed staff and administrators advised on any concerns or issues regarding children, teen parents, and parents of teen parents.
  • Work with students and their children in a nurturing, positive, non-judgmental, non-preferential manner.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding students, children, families, programming, and staff.
  • Plan and implement daily routines of children and assist with program direction.
  • Implement department/school discipline guidelines.
  • Remain flexible during periods of change or reassignment.
  • Maintain sanitation and health standards.
  • Meet infant and toddler individual needs including diapering, changing, feeding, play times, and napping.
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
