About The Position

The Instructional Aide assists the teacher with classroom instruction and administrative duties, working with individual students, small groups, or the whole class. The role also includes supervising students throughout the school day, including in the lunchroom, on buses, and on the playground. The aide may cover classroom assignments when a substitute is unavailable and is expected to maintain confidentiality. The position has no supervisory responsibility.

Requirements

• Meet at least one of the following qualification options at hiring: at least two years of study at an institution of higher education; an associate’s degree or higher; or meeting a rigorous standard of quality test.
• Ability to work well with children and in a one-on-one setting.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Experience working with children.
• Ability to handle a high-stress, fast-paced work environment.

Responsibilities

• Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
• Assist with administering and scoring objective testing instruments or work assignments.
• Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
• Help with the inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
• Help the teacher maintain administrative records and prepare required reports.
• Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
• Conduct teacher-assigned instructional exercises with individual students, small groups, or the whole class.
• Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
• Cover classroom assignments as needed when a substitute is unavailable.
• Keep the teacher informed of individual students’ special needs or problems.
• Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
• Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
