About The Position

The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, a remote storage facility called the Hampden Center, and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center, is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. Position Summary Under the supervision of the Head of Library Instruction and Research Services, the Instruction and Research Assistant provides information literacy instruction and research support at Research Center in the Anderson Academic Commons. As part of a pool of Instruction and Research Assistants, the person in this role will work 10-20 hours a week, providing library instruction for first year writing, first year experience, and disciplinary classes. This role will also carry out research consultations with library patrons, work at the Research Center Desk, assist with outreach projects, help with office administration tasks, and complete special projects as assigned. This is a non-benefited, part-time, temporary position for the year that may possibly be extended based on departmental need. Occasional night or weekend hours may be required to assist with desk coverage, consultations, outreach, or teaching. This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

Requirements

  • Completed undergraduate degree.
  • Experience in a customer service position.
  • Experience working in a library or archive.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Current student or recent graduate from a Library and Information Science graduate program.
  • Experience teaching including creating lesson plans, learning activities, and other instructional materials.
  • Experience providing research or reference support.
  • Familiarity and experience with computers and common software applications.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with teaching faculty to identify student learning goals related to information literacy and library instruction.
  • Create lesson plans, instructional materials, and activities for library workshops for first year writing and general education courses.
  • Teach engaging and student-center library workshops.
  • Assess the effectiveness of library workshops through surveys or formative assessment techniques.
  • In research consultations, provide in-depth assistance for students, faculty, staff, and other library users. Research consultations typically involve teaching patrons how to: find and evaluate sources for their research topics, choose the right discipline-specific databases, use effective search terms and filtering techniques, and utilize citation management software to keep track of sources.
  • Receive professional support and feedback from Research Center faculty and staff to ensure success in this position.
  • Help staff the Research Center Desk, answering questions asked by library patrons and providing high quality customer service.
  • Assist with office administration duties including mail sorting, supply ordering, and data collection for departmental report.
  • Complete projects as assigned by librarians.
