About The Position

The Institutional Research Associate (Data Analyst) is a hands-on role responsible for analyzing data and building data products, including dashboards, reports, and curated data sets. This position serves as the lead analyst on requests related to program and student data, with additional support for student, course, and employee data. This role contributes as a member of the Analytics and Reporting team within the Office of Institutional Research (OIR) and partners closely with the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA). Both offices are located at GSU’s downtown Atlanta campus. The position’s work schedule is in-office five days per week.

Requirements

  • Experience extracting and working with data using tools such as Oracle SQL Developer, PL/SQL, Argos, Cognos, or similar platforms
  • Experience using data analysis and visualization tools such as Excel, Power Query, Power BI, Tableau, SPSS, STATA, R, or Python
  • Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn complex questions into clear, usable outputs
  • An understanding of reporting and data visualization best practices
  • Knowledge of typical university business processes, particularly those impacting data processing
  • The ability to work with data from multiple systems and navigate integrated information environments
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple requests and prioritize effectively
  • A service-oriented mindset when working with stakeholders across the university
  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain data to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience reviewing, validating, and quality-checking data, analyses, and reports
  • A commitment to data accuracy, documentation, and reproducibility
  • Awareness of data privacy and compliance considerations (e.g., FERPA, IRB)
  • Experience using standard business software tools, including the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree and two years of relevant experience
  • Experience with Banner by Ellucian or similar student information systems
  • Experience building data visualizations and dashboards using tools such as Power BI or Tableau
  • Experience working with relational databases and programming languages such as Oracle SQL, Python, R, etc.
  • Experience using AI tools to improve efficiency and quality of work
  • Experience working with National Student Clearinghouse data

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary point of contact for OAA data requests, working directly with stakeholders to understand needs and deliver clear, actionable results
  • Write SQL and use tools to extract and prepare data from university systems
  • Combine and manage data from multiple sources, both internal and external, to support analysis and reporting
  • Build dashboards, standard reports, and data visualizations to support decision-making
  • Present findings in both written and verbal formats to a range of audiences, including non-technical stakeholders
  • Create and maintain documentation to support reproducibility and long-term sustainability of reports and processes
  • Support program reporting efforts, including Financial Value Transparency and Gainful Employment reporting requirements
  • Participate in the university-wide data community
  • Assist with technical support for the syllabus collection and repository system
  • Participate in OAA meetings and contribute to the broader university data community
