About The Position

SMART Reading, the state’s largest volunteer-based nonprofit literacy organization, is looking for an energetic, creative, and experienced fundraising professional to join our development team based in Portland. As the Institutional Giving Development Officer, you will be part of our statewide development team with a primary focus on the Portland Metro area. Your work will focus on the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of institutional prospects, including foundations, family foundations, corporate foundations, corporate partners, and government granting agencies. The ideal candidate will have a deep passion for our literacy mission and an innate ability to translate that mission into support for our institutional partners. With strong relationship-building instincts and the drive to meet ambitious fundraising goals, you will play a key role in securing and sustaining vital funding. You will be managing a diverse portfolio of institutional donors, leading grant strategy, and strengthening corporate partnerships that ensure every child in Oregon can realize their full potential.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for executing fundraising activities and achieving institutional fundraising goals as part of a statewide development team.
  • Effectively identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward institutional prospects, including family foundations, foundations, corporate foundations, corporate partners, and government granting agencies.
  • Lead and facilitate grant strategy meetings and coordinate fundraising and program teams to align grant pursuits with organizational priorities.
  • Write, edit, and submit highly compelling grant proposals, letters of intent (LOIs), and comprehensive funder reports, ensuring strict adherence to guidelines and deadlines.
  • Maintain and scale a statewide institutional toolkit, including a grant language library, boilerplate organizational narratives, and impact data templates to streamline grant applications across regional teams.
  • Design and execute corporate engagement strategies that convert corporate volunteer groups and workplace giving programs into institutional event sponsorships and annual corporate partnerships.
  • Manage the institutional giving calendar, tracking all application pipelines, reporting schedules, and deliverable due dates to ensure compliance with funder requirements.
  • Create effective solicitation, stewardship, and engagement materials and new campaigns for the institutional portfolio as needed for success.
  • Create and manage events, both cultivation and solicitation, as applies to the institutional portfolio.
  • Maintain and ensure up-to-date record keeping in Raiser's Edge, tracking grant proposal statuses, multi-year funding cycles, and restricted funding deliverables while utilizing tools like Grants Watch for ongoing prospect research.
  • Support broader statewide fundraising strategies, cross-departmental collaborations, and complete other development projects as required by leadership.
