About The Position

The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services has significant oversight and involvement in public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, emergency response and recovery, policing and police oversight and public safety. The ministry works to ensure the development, availability and access to Restorative Justice, Victim Services, and specialized courts and administers federal firearms legislation and advocates for Alberta’s lawful firearms owners and promotes safety. The Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (ASPS) was created in July 2025, and once operational, will strengthen Alberta’s existing policing model and complement the province’s current police services. The ASPS will help fill law enforcement service gaps and ensure its law enforcement resources are deployed efficiently to meet Alberta’s evolving public safety needs. It is anticipated that this position will transition to the new Alberta Sheriffs Police Service at a future date.
Requirements
- Accomplished policing leader with 15 years of experience, including five years in senior leadership roles.
- Experience leading complex policing operations, diverse teams, and organizational change initiatives.
- Knowledge of policing legislation, policies, standards, and the federal, provincial, and municipal frameworks that shape public safety.
- Expertise in quality management systems, incident command structures, policing technologies, analytics, and information systems.
- Experience building effective relationships with law enforcement partners, government agencies, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrates political acuity, sound judgment, and strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Committed to integrity, accountability, fairness, and inclusion.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results in complex environments.
- University degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, or a related discipline. A one-for-one equivalency of related experience or education will be considered.
- Must be eligible for appointment as a Police Officer in Alberta in accordance with the Police Act.
- Must provide proof of qualifications.
- Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
- Must hold a valid Class 5 Driver's License (or equivalent).
- Must successfully complete professional standards, background, and reference checks.
Responsibilities
- Provides strategic and operational leadership to support public safety, organizational excellence, and the successful delivery of policing services.
- Ensures operational effectiveness, risk mitigation, and compliance with legal, regulatory, and human rights standards in a complex policing environment.
- Plays a critical role in establishing the organization and supporting the transition of Alberta Sheriffs personnel, functions, and resources into the new police service.
- Leads assigned policing and support functions and ensures effective delivery of operational plans, programs, and services.
- Provides leadership in community safety, crime prevention, stakeholder engagement, and organizational development while fostering public trust and confidence in ASPS.
